Spurs lightly jingled as Toby subtly bounced along with the nice jog that Blackie was doing. He was ponying his two other reining mounts, his bay gelding Doc, and his goofy bay mare Jewel in halters. He had almost come to the decision to ship her back home to Georgia, but he wasn't going to do that until he had a replacement mount lined up and waiting. He liked having three horses, two could be used for class, and one for him to ride to demonstrate.
The grin grew on the cowboy's face as he was nearer to the brand new reining arena that had been constructed over the summer. He looked out at the perfectly plowed sand, the grains being raked in the most favorable direction for the sliding stops. Though, for the beginners class, the stops wouldn't have very much sliding, as much as responsiveness and fast back-ups.
The instructor leaned over and opened the gate. He left it open as he rode through, leading his two other horses. The man rode over to the railing, about twenty feet from the gate, and dismounted. He quickly changed out the black horse's bit for his halter and tied him to the post. He also tied Jewel up a horse length away. The cowboy then slid the correctional shank bit into Doc's mouth, and gathered the reins. Since he was there about ten minutes early, he started to warm up the horse in case a student needed to use one. He always had Blackie to ride, but he wanted to be prepared. He didn't know the exact number of students that would be here, but it was more than the previous classes. Which was exciting.

Amber groaned and sat up as the sun bounced off the mirror and into her eyes. She moved away, rolling over only to bolt upright and look at the clock. She flew from her bed and raced into the bathroom.
15 minutes later, she ran towards the barn, grinning like crazy. She was so excited for her classes to start up, even Math, which she hated. A nicker filled Amber's ears as she drew close to two horses. Amber's brown, green, and grey eyes brightened as she slipped into the stall containing a black gelding.
" Hey Buddy," She whispered to the gelding before patting him. She opened the stall and let the gelding walk out before heading to the tackroom. Even with no halter or anything, the little black quarter horse stood there, quietly and waited for Amber, his eyes and ears trained on the tackroom door. As soon as she stepped out, tack in hand, Amber grinned as the black quarter horse nickered to her. " Hey Little black thing..." She smiled at the gelding before dumping her tack on the floor and flipping a brush up before catching it and running it along the black's body. She threw a black western saddle pad before the saddle was thrown up. The copper-haired girl grabbed the cinch and began to do it up. She plopped her western-style helmet on her head as her little 15'2 gelding took the bit easily. She flicked his ears forward before doing up the throat latch. With a click, she led her gelding down the aisle and towards the Reining Arena. She spotted a man riding a beautiful bay gelding. She leaned against the fence and watched, her brown-speckled eyes watching him closely. Black snorted and rubbed his head on her back, causing Amber to glare at him before sighing. " Ok Bud..." She checked his cinch before nodding and placing her foot in the stirrup. The black snorted and collected his head as Amber got ready. When she was ready, Amber sighed and relaxed, watching the other pair in the arena. She spotted the open gate and urged Black forward. trying to stay out of the man's way, she urged Black faster and grinned as he picked up a jog before pretty much slidding to the stop in the middle. She patted Black, watching the man and keeping an eye out for more people.

Sam jogged from her room in White Ribbon over to White Oak in her boots and red plaid. She wanted to match Goliat but she couldn't find her blue plaid anywhere. Maybe she left it at home? Oh well onto Reining. She was excited for it along with any of her classes, because this is her first semester here. Goliat had his head out of the stall to greet her before she had even reached him. "Hello, my beautiful." Her hands reached out for his face but he retreated to the back of his stall. He was smart, he knew that it was time to ride. She had just groomed him, but she needed a new change of clothes, and her tack was already next to the stall. Once the gelding was tacked up in his blue, Sam walked him to the nice reining arena. She saw a man in a man in the arena already with three horses. He must be the instructor. There was also a girl out riding her horse. The gate was opened already. No reason to yell gate. She walked the gelding into the arena, about only ten or fifteen feet. Went over her tack, making all of the appropriate adjustments to the tack. Goliat began nudging her backside. She can take a hint. Sam placed her left foot in the left stirrup, and lifted her body up over the gelding. Outfit

Lucy was amazed at how early she had gotten up, without falling back asleep. First on her schedule was Reining One. Her and Ticker had never had much experience so she hoped to learn something that could be useful. Walking into her closet, she picked out a pair of jeans, tee shirt, and some boots. Walking into the bathrrom, Lucy showered and went through her usual routine before changing into the clothes. Walking out of the door, Lucy rushed around campus to the barn. Seeing Red Williow Barn come into view, Lucy walked inside seeing that the stables were fairly busy. Having to squeeze her way to Ticker's stall door, Lucy looked around. No free cross ties, she thought to herself sighing. Walking to the tack room, she grabbed her Western tack and then headed back to his stall. Setting the tack on the stall door, Lucy grabbed a soft body brush out of her bucket of supplies and unlacthed the door. Walking in, she started to run the brush across Ticker's body. Finishing with grooming, Lucy now placed the pad ontop of his back before the heavy saddle. Grabbing the cinch, Lucy started to tighten it up. Placing the bit in her hand, Ticker took it easily, which made life a whole lot better. Latching up the bridle, Lucy started to lead Ticker out of the raging barn and to the Reining Arena. Leading him down to the arena, she noticed that two students and a man, being the teacher, had already beat her too it. Smiling at all the others, Lucy walked inside seeing that the gate was already open. She made all appropriate adjustments to the tack and then mounted up onto Ticker.

Olivia rolled out of bed in the morning and glanced at the clock. She was running slightly behind. She hurried through brushing her teeth and getting dressed, then tied her hair back and put on her boots. She had never really tried Reining before, but today she would be able to. She hoped that Mr. Matthews had an extra horse he could lend her, though. She didn't really want to think badly about Blue, but the mare was a jumper, not a Western horse... And her own inexperience with the mare's would make the class worse than it might be otherwise.
She stopped by the Red Willow Barn briefly to grab her helmet before she walked towards the reining arena. She had heard that it was new, but, as she was new as well, it seemed like it belonged. She walked up to the rail and saw Mr. Matthews warming up one of his horses, or at least, a horse. She paused on the outside, looking at the three people already inside with Mr. Matthews... Two girls she didn't know, and the one from the trail. Olivia shrugged and called out to Mr. Matthews, "Mr. Matthews, my horse isn't trained in reining, what would you like me to do?"

Mr. Matthews asked the bay for a lope as he traveled in a circle with a diameter of about forty five feet. The bay's back was slightly hallowed as his neck was raised higher than the cowboy would have preferred. He did know all of the maneuvers of a reining mount, he just didn't the collection or softness of it. But the cowboy bought him so he could fix those problems. Rather than spending a bunch of money on a horse that was already finished like Blackie. Thinking he heard something, the cowboy looked over as a girl walked in on a black horse, or maybe really dark bay. By the stockiness and nature, he assumed it was a quarter horse, probably registered, as people didn't seem to ride grades around here. He noticed she was wearing a helmet. It was good, but it was never enforced in the western world as much as english riding. "Morning," he dipped his hat to her with a small smile. He was a bit surprised to actually have early students, "You can just warm 'em up until the class starts," he suggested.
Giving his focus back on the bay, as he lazily loped around, snorting here and there, the cowboy looked over as he saw a blonde girl leading her horse in the arena. He was a pretty bay with some nice chrome. He also looked like the build of a quarter horse. The man figured that the girl would probably start to warm her horse up anyway. He would introduce himself one time, to the whole class when it actually started.
The man felt the reins get heavy, and he knew Doc was becoming bored. So he slowed to a trot, and as they came around, he picked up on the rein and drew his head in slightly, cutting across the middle of the circle and then jumped back on it again, still at a trot. When he got close to the same spot, he did it again, using a little bit of the horse's anticipation to help him, as Doc was soft and quickly responded.
A brunette girl entered the arena, leading a loud splashed paint. The horse was definitely an eye catcher. The cowboy smiled small, liking horses that were unique. But, his family bred quarter horses, so he just stuck to them. He wondered if the girl barrel raced or anything with the gelding. He was about to comment to the riders that they could start warming-up, but then he heard his name.
Toby turned, and saw the student was Olivia. She was also signed up to be his assistant in government. Which, other than grading papers, and running unnecessary errands, like refilling his coffee mug, there was really nothing else to do. He headed his horse over by the rail in her direction after hearing her inquiry. The cowboy slowed the bay by the fence to a stop, "Getting inside the arena might be the first helpful step," he replied with a grin, and started to dismount, "You can use Blackie here," he offered, "He's a great teacher, but if you'd rather have a student, you can ride Doc, and if you are feeling especially brave, there's Jewel," he added, his eyes trailing to the mare. Even if she said she would ride Jewel, he wouldn't have put her up to it. He figured which one she would pick anyway, which was fine with him. That's what these horses were here for.

The blonde walked from her dorm room, her face smiling as she held the phone to her ear, talking to her dad as she walked to the barn, "Okay, Dad. I will, don't worry. I love you!" she giggled and took the phone from her ear, hanging up. With a sigh, she shoved it in her back pocket and entered the stables. The blonde was surprised seeing the barn so busy. She gathered all of her tack in the tack room and walked down to her horse's stall. The bay stuck his head out, his ears listening to all of the chaos as students led horses this way and that.
Rin let herself into the stall, and she quickly tacked up Jo in her only saddle, which was barrel racing, the all around felt pad, and his usual bridle. She put his boots on his legs, leaving off the bell boots, and then led him out, and towards the arena.
The girl swallowed, seeing all of the horses and riders already in the ring. She hoped she wasn't late, and she glanced at her watch. Only a minute or two to spare. The sixteen year old entered the arena, and closed the gate behind her, out of habit. She saw that Mr. Matthews was currently addressing another girl. Rin bit her lip, realizing she hadn't warmed up Jo this morning, so he would be really fresh. She had also forgotten a lunge line. This was great! Her cheeks heated up in embarrassment. She supposed she could just jump on, but she didn't want to get bucked off in front of all of these students. Her blue eyes darted from side to side, and she led her thoroughbred over to the instructor, waiting for him to be done, "Excuse me, um, Mr. Matthews," she bit her lip, her voice quiet, "I um, I forgot to warm up Jo this morning, and I don't have a lunge line with me and he's cold-backed and.." she swallowed, knowing she was making a fool of herself.

Griffen walked to his reining class. He didn't have a horse yet so he hoped that Mr. Matthews would understand. He dropped his books off at his dorm room and headed to the reining arena. He had no idea how to rein and had tried western before. He walked into the outdoor arena. Her saw that Mr. Matthews had two extra horses tied up and figured they were for students who didn't have a horse yet. He walked up to the teahcer. He was nervous about speaking to him and hoped he would understand why Griffen didn't have a horse yet. He hoped that he would soon have a horse though. "Mr. Matthews I don't have a horse yet. I was wondering if you'd let me use one of the school's horses or I can just watch and observe." He said to the teacher. He had brought a note book and pencil to take notes if he was to observe. He knew you could something from watching other people do it but he figured you could learn more if you were actually on the horse learning from your mistakes not just the other rider's mistakes.

Sorya walked into the barn and watched as all three of her horses poked their heads out and greeted her. She opened Cowboy's stall and tied him to the cross ties. She then grabbed her saddle and placed it on the ground and gave the gelding a quick brushing. She then lifted the heavy western saddle onto the gelding's back, a long with a fluffy saddle pad. She then put on his bridle and untied him. She led him out of the barn and to the reining arena. She was a bit nervous because she had forgotten what her father had taught her..well most of it. But she had Cowboy to help her out. He was trained for this. She found the arena and opened the gate. Some students where already on horses. She mounted the gelding and started to warm him up. Sorya felt Cowboy beneath her give a light shake when she stopped for a second and then moved into a trot. She let Cowboy drop his head a little and then stopped. She looked at all the students and sighed. What if she made a fool of herself? What if she did something bad? Only time would tell if she did something.

Hearing the man, say she could start warming up,Amber smiled and nodded before urging her gelding forward. Black immediately dropped his head and picked up a walk.
Walking around the ring twice, Amber clicked at the gelding and grinned as he picked up a slow jog. Amber sat deep and looked up, running her checklist through her head.
She then sat back and pulled a little on the reins. Black snorted and sat back, doing an almost slidding stop. Amber smiled before giving him a small tap with her leg and grinning as he turned around, sitting back on his hanches. She gave him a small click and nodding as he picked up a jog.
She had trained the gelding herself, down to the last trick. She turned him in a circle and kissed at the gelding. The black horse picked up a slow steady lope, his head staying level with his back. She started a small septietine, asking for a flying lead change as they circled. Black got 6 out of the 8 lead changes Amber asked for. As she finished, she asked for a walk before smiling and patting him, letting him walk into the middle. She looked up, noticing a lot of people now. She walked up and halted Black beside the man, who she had thought must have been the teacher and by the sounds of the other students, it seemed the man's name was Mr. Matthews. She wasn't sure but said nothing as she sat in the middle of the ring, ready for it to start.

More riders began to appear with their horses. Soon she wouldn't even be able to warm up, Goliat doesn't like when to many horses are warming up with him. Back home when Sam would take him Barrel Racing, people would cut him off when they warmed up, making him slow down and stop. She began with a fast walk. Before to many people began riding out to where she was, she began loping in her circles. The bay began dropping is head low and picking up his pace. "Hey, stop it!" The gelding was trying to buck. Obviously he still had some heat, and needed a little more work. She continued loping the gelding and laughing. His attitude had changed from 'I want to go run some barrels' to 'Oh, hurry up already'.
After a few more minutes Goliat was ready for class. Sam rode the bay over to the instructor and another girl. Mr. Matthews came up every once in awhile so she caught on that was the instructors name. The blonde noticed that there were a lot of bays in the ring. Well, that's interesting. She also saw a gorgeous splash paint in the ring. Sam greeted herself to the girl next to her. "Hi, I am Sam." The black gelding next to her was shimmering. His coat was beautiful. He reminded her of Popeye after a good bath. Popeye is gonna need to go for a ride later too. She hasn't ridden Popeye in a few days unfortunately.

As Lucy mounted up she noticed the instructor smile a bit. "Must be at you boy." she said, noticing a few others looking in their direction. Once mounted, Lucy started to walk Ticker in the direction of the teacher. "Hello, I'm Lucy," she said greeting him before talking too much, "me and my horse, Ticker, have never actually been trained in reining as he spooks easilu, and I was just going to ask if I could have some help with other Western disciplines outside of class?" Lucy asked him. This was her and Ticker's first real reining class. She had never really been in a Western saddle that much either, and she just hoped that he didn't think this was a joke. Waiting for and answer, Ticker perked his ears up at every horse and rider that had come into the ring. Shaking his head, and lowering it to the ground, Lucy rubbed her hand up and down his neck in a soothing motion trying to keep him steady. Now playing with his snow white mane, Lucy hoped that everything would go well today in class.

Olivia grinned as the man told her to come into the arena, “I was worried that one of you might slide into me or something.” She slipped through the gate while she was speaking, though, proving that she was just joking. She glanced at the horses as Mr. Matthews introduced each one of them. She was a student herself, so she didn’t want a ‘student’ horse, not really. She didn’t want to ruin one of Mr. Matthews’ horses. “If it’s okay with you, I’ll ride Blackie.” She grinned, “I’m by far not good enough to teach a student horse.”
She saw a girl come up with her horse and noted that it was a pretty thoroughbred. She stepped slightly away as they started talking, not wanting to invade in their privacy. She saw another boy walk up without a horse and smiled, slightly relieved by the fact that she wasn’t the only one without a western mount.
Another girl seemed to come in, but Olivia didn’t pay much attention to her. Instead, she swung up onto the horse she had been loaned and settled in for a moment, rubbing the horse’s neck, “Be nice to me, okay? I’m new to this.” She watched the teacher and the class starting to gather and shifted slightly, waiting for the class to begin.

Toby collected the split reins in his hands and handed them out to the brunette, as she had chose the black gelding. He chuckled lightly at her comment about sliding, "Nah, I'd like to think a horse would choose to dodge person than run over 'em but," he shrugged. Horses were horses. They didn't seem to have the same morality that humans carried, "Oh, Doc's not really a 'student' horse, he just doesn't keep his head low or collect as nice," the man admitted. But other than that, both of the horses could be trusted to not buck, bolt, or rear. The man turned as Olivia mounted up on Blackie, "He neck reins as well, so just go warm him up and get to know him," he instructed, figuring the girl would know how to ride with just one hand.
Hearing a soft voice, the man turned and saw a blonde with her horse. She had been in the class, but her name slipped his mind, but he knew her face. He listened to her comment, and could tell she was upset or nervous, "Oh, that's nothing to worry about," he shook his head. His eyes trailed the arena, and he spotted and empty space near a back corner, "Just go warm him over there real quick and..." he paused as he untied Doc from the post and un-clipped the really long lead rope, "You can borrow this. Oh, and you might want to take a few breaths and just relax," he added with a light grin. Seeing her off, he grabbed the bridle off the saddle that had been on the bay and started to slip the bit into his mouth when he heard another student's voice.
Turning, Toby saw a boy, whom he hadn't met before. He listened to the request, and he slid the bit into Doc's mouth and quickly flipped his ears through the headstall, "Have you ever ridden western before?" he asked, "You are more than welcome to ride Doc here, he won't do nothing to ya, promise," the man grinned as he backed the horse from the rail and offered out the split leather reins to the boy, "You can go ahead and get to know him and warm him up if ya want." Now, he was very glad he had his three horses. Even if Jewel was well..... Jewel. The mare started to nicker lightly in concern, or curiosity as her other two companions were being taken away.
"Oh, you big baby," the cowboy said, in a teasing manner as he grabbed the bridle and snaffle bit from the saddle horn and walked around to the mare's face. He quickly exchanged her halter for the bit and headstall and swung up on the mare's back. Now, he could look around and get a good look at the students. A blonde girl had since come in on a pretty paint, with more bay spots than the other one. He turned his head as a dark haired girl approached him on her black quarter horse. He pulled a slip of paper from his shirt pocket and unfolded it, "I think everyone is here that's gonna show, what's your name?" he asked her. After she replied, he nodded and looked back at the group, and everyone seemed like their horses were warmed up and ready, "Okay! I am going to call roll, so speak up when I call your name," he spoke for them to all hear and figured they would gather around the middle like Amber had, "Okay, Audrie Green?...Eurico Hanson?....Griffen Sayuer?... Lucy Davis?...Olivia Kwinn?... Renee Finn?... Samantha Lawrence?...Sorya Jones?..."
"Arlight," the cowboy glanced down at his watch, "Let's get started. I want each of you to trot on a twenty foot circle counterclockwise, or to the left," he instructed, "Be mindful of other riders, so watch her horses, and try to keep track of where your horse's feet fall by the tracks in the sand." he explained, then his eyes trailed to some small stacked orange cones over by the gate, "And, if it would be easier, would any one like a cone to work around?" he asked, looking back over the students. He hoped they would realize that asking for help, or having an aid could be better off without having one. Cones often help the rider be more specific. The best trainers and riders used them. The goal of reining was about control and fluency. Control of the whole horse. Head, neck, shoulders, hips...

The blonde swallowed and sucked on her lips. She watched a brunette get on the instructor's horse and started to ride him off. Her grey blue eyes looked back to the cowboy, as he started talking. Renee lightly parted her lips and felt her shoulders relax. A nervous grin crossed her face, and she watched as the man got a lead line for her. She took it and lightly laughed at his comment, "Thanks," she replied. Her eyes darted to the spot the instructor was talking about.
She bit her lip, thinking on asking something else, but a boy had walked up to get his attention as well. The sixteen year old turned around, "Come on, bud," she told her horse quietly as she led him to a far corner. The line wasn't terribly long, just about ten feet, but it would work. The girl clipped the snap t one side of the snaffle bit and clucked, holding her left arm out with the lead, and slapping her right hand against her thigh on her jeans. The bay tossed his head and started going around at a trot. His attention was clearly elsewhere as he gave occasionally to the bit. Rin watched him go around her a couple of times, and she asked for a lope with a kiss. Jo lowered his head to the ground and rounded out, but did not offer to buck. Maybe he wasn't as fresh as Renee had thought, but at least doing this made her feel better.
She slumped her body and opened her shoulder, only having to gently guide the rope as the bay turned in and faced her, "Good boy," she said, and then clipped the lead on the other side and sent him out again. The thoroughbred snorted, and seemed to be calming down already. Renee pulled him to the middle and unclipped the rope. She looked up, seeing that students had started to gather in the middle of the pen. She coiled the rope and hung it over her saddle horn. The blonde collected the reins and swung up into the saddle. She patted Jo's neck as he stood still. She barely squeezed her heels, as the horse walked off eagerly, ready to go somewhere. She halted him sort of by the black quarter horse, her eyes trailing to the rider, before bashfully loooking away. She quietly listened as Mr. Matthews said his name, and then started calling roll, "Here," she said softly, as her name was called.
The blonde blinked at the instructions given, and slowly raised a hand, "Can I have a cone please?" she asked. She had never done really specific work with Jo, and knew this would be a good, but possibly challenging class for them. She just hoped she wouldn't make a fool of herself. Her reins were lowered on the gelding's neck, and her fingers fiddled with his coarse mane. It was a habit she had when she was nervous. And, this was a time to be nervous. Look at all of the people that could be judging her for her horse handling skills.
