Chase kept the horse moving forward, the walk swept over the arena and the more the gelding’s muscles warmed the better he moved. The suspension in his walk alone was impressive, he was strong and in good working condition. Touching at the horses hock with his schooling whip the horse jumped a little bit, keeping his hands soft he absorbed the motion and smiled as the gelding settled once more. Feeling the horse relax into the rhythm Chase played with the flexion, changing directions he encouraged to keep the horse working so well from behind. As the horse continued to relax into the rhythm Chase peered over to Cara, the mare seemed to have found the right contact and it improved the image greatly. Chase smiled, returning his attention to the large black bay walking beneath him. Shortening his snaffle rein a few inches he picked up the curb, though kept it long with barely any contact. Sitting deep he pushed the horse into a trot, the gelding was a touch behind the leg and as a result Chase touched him with the whip. Calvin instantly sprung forward in the gait, his hind end quickened as it drove under him.
“There you go.”
The horses shoulders were allowed to elevate as he used his back and hind end properly. The quality of the horses trot improved with each step, keeping him on a circle he encouraged the horse to stretch down and improve the quality of the trot now so when he picked the horse up and collected him the quality would carry over. Posting to the trot Chase used his seat still to encourage the horse to move forward, stepping through and up. Calvin was schooled, he knew his job but seemed a little lazy today which might change Chase’s plans for their ride. Though as he continued to trot on the horse seemed to pick up in energy, the trot gained suspension each step. Working the gelding through some serpentines he cantered with the same goal in mind. Long and low, quickening the hid end of his horse to improve the movement quality, after cantering Calvin in both directions Chase was content that the gelding had warmed his back muscles enough. Letting the horse walk he looked over to Cara whom was cantering. The black and white mare was a nice mare, a good mover – quality animal. Chase couldn’t help himself as Calvin walked keeping out of Cara’s way.
“That mare is certainly worth your time, her movement will only improve with proper work.”
He couldn’t help himself, horses were his livelihood – he was used to giving his opinion on each animal that passed before him, it was his job. Even if he wasn’t working as a trainer in a barn anymore, he was working as a coach now where his opinion was needed, but only at certain times of the day. He was okay with it, most of the time he managed to hold his tongue but today he was a chatterbox – perhaps it was the fact that he had been at the school for a few weeks and had yet to really connect with someone on a friend level. He was looking forward to taking Jack out for a run later, perhaps it would lead to some adult interaction.
