Aurora was all but bouncing in the dorm room she shared with Rose. She gave Princess an apologetic look. "I'm sorry girl." She said as she pulled up her Punky Ponies jodhpurs. "I'm going on a trail ride, so you can't come." She knew that dogs were indeed allowed on the trails, but she didn't think that her Cav listened well enough to be taken on a trail ride. She posed in front of the mirror as she pulled the matching cross country jersey over her head. She loved the way the two toned purple Jodhpurs and jersey went together with the pony embroidery. She pulled her hair back into a messy pony tail, slipped her feet into her Ariat boots and then raced down to the barn to get Globe ready.
As she skidded into the barn, she made sure to slow down her pace, just in case the barn manager changed her mind about Rory being mature enough of a rider to go out on the trails solo. "Hey Glow-baby!" She said as she grabbed hold of the gelding's purple halter and slipped into the stall.
After she'd had a bit of help from the barns lovely barn hands, she had the gelding ready to be ridden and she led him out toward the door. She paused on her way passed Ms Carr's office and popped her head in the open door. "Thank you Ms Carr." She said brightly. "I promise to stick to the Green Hill Trails. We won't be more than an hour and I've got mom's phone." With a flash of a grin, she headed out of the barn with her horse in tow.
Using the mounting block, she swung into the saddle. Getting her seat comfortable, she asked for the help of one of the riders returning from a lesson or whatever and tightened the girth. She then squeezed the gelding forward and they were off! She sat deep, remembering everything she had been taught, and rode toward the trails.
Things were going really well as they entered the path, following the arrow that led to the easy, gentle trails that she had promised to stick to. The preteen released a long sigh as she let the gelding plod along. It even seemed that Globe was enjoying himself.
Further down the trail, there was a loud crack to the left of them and Globe spooked wildly to the side, causing the young girl to let out a scream and close her hands around the reins in panic. The gelding, who was already spooked, reacted to his rider's panic and reared up before he took off through the trees, the trail they were following suddenly forgotten as they crashed through the underbush, the dappled horse doing all he could to get away from the noise that had spooked him, and his rider's heavy hands.
Rory had tears streaming down her cheeks as she did all she could to hold on. After she had been smacked in the face by the first dozen trees, she lay low against the horse's neck as she gave up holding the reins and just tangled her fingers into his mane, anything she could do not to fall off.
They galloped mad-dash for what seemed like hours, the girl had lost her stirrups and hugged the gelding with her long legs, using her life time in the saddle and the horse's momentum to keep her on. She wasn't going to lie to herself though, and knew that if Globe took a sharp turn or came to a sudden stop, she would go flying. "Stop! Globe! Stop!" She screamed over and over as they ran and it seemed that finally her words hit home, or the gelding had tired of running and the horse skidded to a sudden stop, his young rider went flying off over his head and landed in a bush. Not caring that her brand new rising clothes had been torn up or that she had cuts all over her arms, legs and face, she quickly got to her feet and hurried back to the gelding.
Globe stood where he had stopped, his head down, covered in lathered sweat and breathing heavily. He snorted as his girl wrapped her arms around his neck, his ears flicking back and forth.
Rory checked her pockets for the phone that she'd had on her before she left the barn and burst into tears when she failed to find it. As the adrenaline from the race began to fade, the girl realised how sore she actually was. "We're lost, Globe." She sobbed as she sat down on the ground by his feet. "Mom's going to be so mad, and we're lost." She buried her head in her hand and sobbed.
