Seamus felt her relaxing and almost wanted to reach over and pinch himself. Was it really happening? Then, her hands were against his chest, pushing him away slightly. He kept a sigh in.
Her words were brave, strong. He knew his attempt to protect Cara would always be futile, but he would always try, no matter what. He then pondered her question, interlacing his fingers and touching his index fingers to his lips. "Well, I haven't. I've never actually had a social life with other teenagers. I mostly grew up immersed in detective books. So, I've never met anyone like you. I thought people who had such a strong heart and courage only existed in legends. But, you've proven me wrong."
Seamus listened to her past, intrest sparking in his dark gaze. As she looked back to him, he spoke as wisely as he could. "My tale isn't extravagent. Not half as grand. But I do know that even if I haven't been through the horrors and triumphs you've faced, that maybe it'd be easier to replace those bad memories with good ones if you had someone with you to help you along the way. Not to fight your war, but to help you when you came home."

Cara's eyebrows rose again. "Anyone's life is grand compared to mine!" She said. "Give me a mom, dad, three kids and their dog any day. There are so may kids that go through the system and get adopted out, no one wants me though. I'm damaged goods, with really bad breeding." She gave a very rare soft smile. "There isn't any guarantee that I will always return here though. Andrews enjoys keeping me on the move, it stops me from getting too settled and stops me from getting my name in too many papers." She frowned slightly. "If I didn't know that my parents were dead, I'd think he was trying to keep me hidden." A smile touched her lips again. "It would be nice to know that there's always someone here for me though."

"People shouldn't care about looks, lineage, or smarts. They should try to look on the inside of a person, and see their true character." He replied.
He could hardly supress the fear in his chest at the thought of her leaving. "Well, if you do leave, I promise I won't forget you. I'd even move with you, if my parents had the money. But no matter where you go, I'll always be there. And that was about the most cliche line I could have said, but, it's true."
He gave her a shy smile, one of hope. Seamus wasn't sure what she thought of him, but maybe, just maybe, he was getting through to her?

The small girl gave a bitter laugh. "They shouldn't, but they do." She returned. "The people who's houses I've served in have only cared about how quickly I could do as I was told." She hand moved to her left hip as she spoke, thinking about the brand she had received from one such family. But there again all of their stock were branded. Every mark on her body was a mark of triumph from someone or other, including herself when you thought about her wrists.
She shook her head. "I don't want you to follow me if I leave, it's not fair on you and your life. I get a feeling that Andrews may have a fight on his hands though if he wants to remove me from this school." She shrugged, thinking about the meetings she'd had with the new school principal. She gave another soft smile. "Thank you, Seamus." She said. "It feels good, talking like this. Keeping it bottled up hurts."

"You can always talk to me Cara." He replied. "Always happy to lend a helping hand." Seamus rubbed hands together nervously. "I consider you a friend, and I hope I can achieve the same rank for you."
He had achieved something by talking to her, maybe gaining her trust a little. He was pleased with himself, and that didn't happen often for him.

Cara gave a ghost of a smile. "Thank you Seamus." She looked to her left and caught the worried eye of the librarian and quickly looked away again. "I feel that I have been here long enough and if I stay any longer I may find myself in the office of Mr Rees again." She closed down the internet browser and closed her notebook. "Thank you for your help." She rose to her feet, gave a graceful curtsy and slipped out of the library.
