Cara sat at the desk on her side of her new dorm room. The bed on her right looked as though it had never been slept in even though they had moved into their new rooms more a month ago. In fact if one looked around her half of the room, other than the books in the case and the tidy piles on her desk, this entire side of the room looked unlived in. If anyone was looking around unless they opened the drawers and closet doors, they would think the room was occupied by only one person. She drew in a trembling breath as she looked at the sketch book that sat on the desk in front of her. Ripping out yet another page, she crumpled it into a ball and threw it into the wastepaper basket that was sitting neatly under the desk. She had spent the last hour sitting here drawing, and all she ended up with were pictures of the mares that had been taken away from her. She was drawing to try and get her mind off what she had lost and drawing pictures of what she was trying to forget was not helping. There again, the ability to be able to forget would also help. With a vexed hiss, she slammed the book closed and placed it on the stack of books at the back right corner of the desk and placed the charcoal pencil she was using into the tin and placed this in the top left corner, next to her other pencil case which she pulled close to her and opened the zip. Removing the red, blue and black pens along with a writing pencil, she placed these carefully in the top centre of her working space before returning the case from where it had come. She then opened her school satchel and took out the folder marked History along with a couple of text books that she was going to skim through in case they offered information she didn't already have. Opening the folder to the page she was up to for her report on the Crusades, she began writing - without opening either text book.

Victoria wiped her eyes on her sleeve, and sniffed. Percy wasn’t getting any better even with all the drugs he was on. Her parents had told Dr Clarkson to put him down later this week, but Victoria couldn’t give up on him. She clutched her books to her chest and dashed up the dormitory stairs. She had more than a thousand dollars in her savings account. Maybe she could buy Percy. Then no one could tell her what to do.
She opened the dorm room door, and dumped the pile of books on her bed. Somehow she couldn’t face a page of dumb history homework, and she picked up the plastic toy horse that stood proudly on her bedside table. Her eyes filled with fresh tears when she thought of Percy, and she hugged the horse to her chest, wishing that this was all just a bad dream. She tried to imagine what it would be like when Percy was gone, but it hurt so bad, she couldn’t bring herself to think about it.
Victoria gently placed the toy back down on the table. She drew in a shaky breath, glancing over at the pile of books she’d dumped on her bed. There was a piece of paper sticking out from the corner of one of the textbooks, and she wriggled it loose. A glaring red F stared back at her, and Victoria winced. Her grades were slipping, but homework and school just seemed to take up time that she could spend with Percy.
Something moved out of the corner of her eye, and Victoria looked over to see Cara sitting at the desk, doing her history homework. The girl was so quiet that sometimes Victoria forgot she even had a roommate. She quickly scrunched up the quiz with its accusing F, and threw it into the waste paper bin. Cara looked busy, and Victoria hovered awkwardly, wondering if the girl would help, but not sure how to ask.
“Oh, hey Cara,” she said shyly. The girl was so intense sometimes, it made Victoria feel uncomfortable. She was so smart and perfect, but it never seemed to Victoria that she was very happy. She didn’t hang around with many kids her own age. Victoria frowned and took a step forward. “Is everything okay?” she asked, biting her lip.

Cara turned a Victoria entered the room, but the other girl seemed so caught up on her own thoughts that Cara turned back around and went back to her work, adding the final touches of colour onto her assignment. She leafed through the pages of her neat handwriting, pleased with what she had accomplished and even though it was early, she would hand it in to Mr Grey at the start of the next History lesson. As well as writing about his time in the second Crusade, she had written about the life, and death, of Richard the Lionhart.
She turned as Victoria spoke to her. "Hi Victoria." She replied softly as she took her glasses off and looked at the other teen. "I could ask you the same question." She replied as she frowned slightly. "I won't lie to you and say I know how you are feeling, but I can promise you that Percy is in the best possible care." When she was at the clinic, she spent as much time with Percy as her jobs would allow her to.

“Yeah, tell that to my parents,” Victoria grumbled. She flopped down onto her bed and picking up a pillow, hugged it to her chest. “They said if he doesn’t get better soon, they’re going to put him down,” she added glumly. An unexpected lump rose in her throat, and her gaze wandered to a show schedule tossed carelessly onto the floor. Victoria wondered if she’d ever be able to look at another horse, without feeling that painful knot in her stomach.
“Anyways, what’s up with you?” she asked, not wanting to think about Percy anymore. It felt like for the past few days, she’d done nothing but cry. “And don’t tell it’s nothing, you liar. We’re roommates. We’re supposed to share stuff.” She propped herself up on the pillow and looked expectantly over at Cara.

Cara nodded. "Maybe you should have Dr Clarkson speak to your parents, he seems quite positive about Percy's recovery."
She went back to her homework as the other girl remained silent. She looked over as Victoria began to speak again, she gave a small emotionless laugh at the girl's words, about Cara being a liar if she tried brushing the girl's question off and the stuff about sharing things cause they were roommates. "My two ponies were removed from the campus grounds. Something about me no longer being distracted from my academic studies." She replied, her voice as emotionless as the laugh. "And I guess I'm feeling a little sorry for myself."
She finished with the history assignment, closed the folder and placed the folder in the pile of completed work on the right hand top corner of the desk. She then took down the work she was currently doing for the child development course she was doing. Opening the folder, she spread the photos she had taken of the children and ponies down in the auction house a couple of weeks ago. She wasn't sure how she was going to incorporate them into the many assignments she had to go through, but she'd work out a way that they'd fit in somehow.
Today's study guide was looking at object permanence. Object Permanence is the knowledge that an object exists even when it can't be seen.
