Alex entered the barn. The horsey smell was all around him, and he filled his lungs with the scent. The stables were his second home, the classroom his first. It wasn't like a horse would judge you, but the trust would be built between you. He quickly walked to the tack room, and looked at his tack. One set for each horse. There was always this dilemma when he started at a new job. Which horse to ride first. Alex decided on Dar-Al-Baida or Biscuit as he was known around the barn. The horse's tack consisted of a navy blue endurance bridle, endurance saddle and green saddle pad with a gel pad to go underneath.
Biscuit was an intelligent horse, and therefore got bored very easily. Alex knew the signs when he got to the horse's stall. The bored look, depressive droop of the finely dished head, and the near death attack when Alex kicked the kick bolt on the bottom of the door. He quickly dodged the horse, and soothed him with a few sugar cubes. While Biscuit was chewing, Alex checked his back to make sure there weren't any tender or sore spots, before placing on the saddle. By that time Biscuit already looked perkier. He slipped on the bridle, or a combination between a bridle and halter.
Alex mounted and allowed Biscuit to walk a long rein. He chose the easier trail as it seemed the best to train, and bring the horse back into a general state of fitness. The day was cool out, but the sun on Alex's back heated him pretty quickly. Biscuit had a spring in his step and his audits pricked forward. This was how Alex enjoyed his afternoons and it was a fantastic time for both horse and rider.

Her lips pursed as she strode down the hallways of Brown Ribbon House, wondering which horse she should take out on the trails for the day. Hettie and herself had had a vigorous work out yesterday, and she had also been working with both Basil and Splodge to try and smooth out some problematic areas. She decided on Flash, as the American Paint horse needed a lot of attention or her grew destructive. Being only three, he still had a lot of training to go. She had already finished her duties as a groom for the day, so she was free. Two canines trotted behind her, Niko the Pit bull and Mocha the Pit bull Boxer cross. Niko held himself with an air of superiority, but Lexie knew it wasn't forced. If people had seen him before Lexie had cleaned him up and got him healthy again, they would think twice about judging him for his breed. Niko was honestly the softest dog she owned, even if he wasn't her favorite like Winston, she knew she could trust him with anyone. Mocha was the more reserved of all her pets, and easily the most nervous. But, Lexie also knew that she couldn't harm a fly. The mix whined as they passed another human being, cowering into Niko's side as they walked along. Lexie clicked her fingers for the crossbreed to come to her side and then she pet her soothingly. Niko decided that he wasn't to be ignored, so launched himself at Lexie and walked along on his hind legs with his forelegs pressed against Lexie's back. Silly boy. she chuckled, reaching around to pat his broad cranium.
The three made their way to White Oak barn, going to tack up the pretty gelding and set out on the trails. Usually, she wouldn't take more than one dog with her, but Mocha had been looking extremely depressed and Lexie knew the fresh air would do her good. As they reached the barn, she paused to fuss some of the horses and ponies that stuck their domes out to her. Then she pried Celebrities jaws from her t-shirt and scolded the Friesian Saddlebred cross mare. As she made her way further into the barn, she noted that Flash was desperately fiddling with the lock. Lexie rolled her eyes, glad that he was yet to learn how to open it, and stood right in front of him. His concentration meant that he was yet to notice his mistress standing there, but then he seemed to sense her presence. He ripped his painted cranium up and snorted in surprise. Then, his expression turned sheepish and he retreated into his stall before turning and pushing his chest into the door once more. This was him trying to tell her that he had done nothing wrong and to stop judging him. His audits pinned against his neck and she just looked at him, her arms crossed as she looked into his one chocolate colored orb and one crystal blue one.
Their staring contest finally concluded when Flash noticed Niko. Niko perked his white audits and danced toward the stable door now that he had been acknowledged by the gelding. He pushed himself up onto his hind legs and leaned against the door. Flash looked bemused at the action, obviously wondering if he could do the same, and then snuffled the dome of Niko. Lexie turned to collect Flashes tack, Mocha following her close behind. They reached the tack room which was only a few doors down, and she quickly collected the saddle and bridle. Back to Flashes stall they went, seeing that Niko and Flash were still bonding. Lexie grinned, and then approached the pair. Down Niko, time to get Flash ready and then we'll go out on the trails. She beamed, pushing the dog down from the stall door. Lexie then entered the stall, making the two dogs sit onto their haunches and wait outside. She was sure Mocha would stay put, but the same couldn't be said for Niko. Being deaf, many things seemed to distract the white canine. Because he couldn't hear things, he had to investigate.
Lexie tacked Flash quickly, only with a little struggle trying to get him to take the bit. She mounted him in the stall, deciding that manovering him through the barn and the gates leading to the trail would be the best for him. She opened up the stall door, noting that Niko had disappeared. She knew he would turn up before she left to go onto the trails. Come on then Mocha. she called to the mix breed, then pushed Flash into a walk and made her way to the barn entrance. She saw that Niko had his head buried in a bush to the right of the barn. Go get him! she told Mocha, who darted over to the deaf canine and tugged on his tail, making him jump almost a mile into the air. Lexie couldn't help but laugh. Once Niko and Mocha were ready again, the four set off toward the trails, Flash being surprisingly calm which alarmed his rider.
As they got onto the trails, Lexie decided that this was her favorite type of weather. The wind was crisp, but the sun warmed her instantly when the air cooled. The air held no clouds today, all you could see was an expanse of beautiful blue sky that went on forever. Now it was also autumn, so nature was amazingly shaded in bright oranges, yellows and red. Perfect. As they rode further into the trails, Niko spotted something. He had an amazing sense of sight, probably heightened due to his lack of hearing. The canine darted forward, leaving Lexie startled and looking around in confusion. Then, she saw two figures up ahead. Another horse and rider. The woman closed her eyes, knowing that Niko wasn't coming back until he had finished investigating, there was no point shouting. He couldn't hear her anyways. Instead, she kicked Flash into a canter. The pair took off toward the rider and his horse. Mocha raced after them, then halted when Lexie and Flash did. Niko skid to a halt beside the horse, his tail wagging furiously. He gave a sharp bark to the horse and rider, announcing his presence and then dropped his fore body playfully. Sorry about that, I would of called him back but he's deaf. He'll give up soon. she told the man, smiling brightly at him. For all Niko's faults, he still was an adorable canine. There was no harm in him at all. I'm Lexie Dixon, by the way. she introduced herself while looking at the man. She noticed how handsome he was, but didn't say anything. She wouldn't ever, she wasn't like that. She wasn't the sort of woman to swoon over every good looking guy, no, she would rather put them down and show that she was boss and nobody could take advantage of her. But, none the less, she kept her posture and features friendly. She always did when she met someone new, it could also change instantly though. She could go from kind and sweet one minute to a b***h the next. All it took was someone to press the correct button.

Alex moved Biscuit into a lively trot. He thought of the horse as the middle child of the herd, as he had acquired him second. Alex loved all his horses equally, but Biscuit was his favourite. The horse was just plain spunky and moved well. The Arab's tail fanned out behind him, and he worked Biscuit on a loose rein. Endurance wasn't required to work the horse in a frame, and just needed a good time and excellent fitness. Another deciding factor was how fast the heart rate went down, Biscuit didn't have a problem with that.
Alex knew he should have been paying attention, but the scenery drew his attention. So when the dog came bounding up, he didn't notice. Biscuit did however, and caught his owner by surprise. He went into a half-rear and neighed loudly. Alex managed to keep his balance somehow, and started soothing Biscuit. The dog was being friendly, but the horse only saw a threat. The scars of Biscuit's abused past weren't physical, but rather mental, and showed up at these moments.
A rider came up to him soon after. He had dismounted, and was standing at Biscuit's head. She was a good looking female, and the horse was positively cute. It's okay. I just need to calm him down. Alex played with Biscuit's forelock. Alexander Compton. Pleasure to meet you Miss. Dixon, he said, a small smile playing on his lips.
