Dearest Rose,
I got your message that you left me by email and decided to write back, partially because I knew the wait would make you miserable (patience is a virtue, darling), but also because letter writing is a lost art and I refuse to let my daughter go through life without having done her part in reviving this art. So we will write, yes?
You linked me to a couple of websites, and I cannot say that I was surprised to find that you have further investigated your mother and Strettenlichte. I have to say, I miss that horse. She had a lovely temperment, didn't she? I wouldn't get on her for anything, but what a horse!! But it appears that you're right, and Starlight is in Holland, with or without your mother. More likely with, if I am any judge of your mother's character. I can't imagine her selling that horse after everything she did for her.
Who would have imagined Starlight having a foal?! Apparently she did, as you've discovered. Seven years ago too! It makes sense though, but it's hard to believe that Anna left that long ago. Longer actually. I forget how young you were. You always were a very perceptive child though, and I'm sure you remember enough of her for it to still haunt you, which explains why you want this mare.
I have to admit that I fear that you getting this horse will open up all of those old scars, especially if she's anything like Starlight. That is not what you need, especially all on your own there at boarding school (I do imagine you very alone there, you know). Isn't Vintage enough for you? Not to your satisfaction? I can already hear your protests, so I'll go along with it and agree that you should get another horse, even if I don't completely understand the issue, though I never have when it comes to these horses.
I don't know what you need in a horse, and you picked Vintage out for yourself, didn't you? The only input I had in that was that she didn't pin her ears when I pet her. So I trust your judgement in horse shopping, but don't you think you should at least meet this horse? Of course, I watched the videos you found of her and they meant nothing to me, but you seemed encouraged by them.
Most of my judgement warns me against letting you go forward with this horse but you're able to make your own choices. You're a responsible young lady, and you understand the consequences and magnitude of buying a horse. You mentioned some prices to offer for the mare, and I have to admit that I was a little shocked. Vintage was close, but didn't meet those sums! Yes, I understand that she's Strettenlichte's filly, and the father is also a successful dressage competitor, but all for a horse?!
Your heart is set on it, right? I can already tell. Just think it over and confirm it with me, please. Settle my mind, and just tell me with the full honestly in your little heart that this is the horse you want. I cannot believe I'm agreeing to this.
Yours,
Dad
