Luke grinned slightly at hearing the vet students word, laughing softly when she seemed so shocked over what came from her mouth, though he agreed with her… sometimes less was more. "It's alright, Cara." He told her kindly, watching as she left before turning back to Ms. Carr.
Lukas nodded his understanding as the woman spoke, one hand rubbing his jaw as he thought about her words. "I'd like to try those herbs, please." He said slowly, the pain evident in his eyes as he thought about potentially having to put the mare down. "At least, a trial… I don't want to… you know…" He trailed off again, a sheen of tears glistening in his eyes as he thought about the vets opinion. He truly cared for Holly, but… could he really make that decision? Lukas didn't know.
The man simply stood and gazed at his mare for a few, thinking about the quality of life she was now living. Deep down, he knew he should put her down, but he just couldn't… not without trying one last time to help her. He nodded slightly upon hearing the news of her blood test results, "Yeah, of course. A sedative." He said disjointedly, obviously lost in thought.

Demeter nodded with a smile as the man said he would give the herbs a trial period before he decided the finality of his mare's life. She reached forward and squeezed the man's shoulder. "I'm on call twenty-four hours a day." She said. "I'll go get that sedative so you can return her to her stall." She would normally suggest that the mare remain in the clinic for the night, but she didn't want to cause the equine any more stress than she deserved.
The vet headed out of the stall and into the surgical room to prepare the sedative, just enough to dull the mare's pain, but not enough to inhibit her from moving - pretty much to dope her.
She then stuck her head into the feed room to try and locate the vet student. She laughed and shook her head when she saw the bagged and labelled herbs that were waiting on the bench along with a small ringbound notebook which the woman was sure was full of the properties of each herb and the recommended dosage. She put them all into a shopping bag to make it easier to carry.
Walking back to the stall she held up the bag of herbs before putting it down outside the stall. "Ok, hold her still for a bit." She injected the needle into the vain in the mare's neck. "Just give her a few minutes and then you are good to go. Cara has left you a notebook which I am sure has everything you need to know in it."

"Thanks." Lukas gave her a half-smile, his thoughts still on what she had said about putting Holly down. As she left to go get the sedative and whatever else she may be getting, he rubbed the mare's face again, reaching up and scratching her ears. The horse had always enjoyed her ears scratched, and she lowered her head a few inches at the touch, but didn't bother to do anything else; she just didn't seem to feel like it.
When the woman came back and explained everything to him, he gave her another strained grin and held Holly still while she injected the sedative. "Tell your student I said 'thanks'." He said, taking the bag a few minutes afterwards and watching Holly. "I really appreciate her going to all that trouble. She didn't have to." He turned back to Holly and watched her for a bit, waiting for the sedative to take effect.
When it did, he slowly led the mare out of her stall, noting that, while she was moving better, her eyes were still dull and listless, as they had been for a while now. "Thanks again. I'll try some gatorade with the herbs. I guess i'll talk to you later if I do have to... well, make that decision." He said, trying and barely succeeding in keeping his voice steady. "Come on Holls." He said to the mare, leading her from the vet clinic.
