The day was grey and stormy, but John didn't mind. He was looking out of the window of him mother's truck, watching as the sign for the school came into view. He had been supposed to start here at the beginning of his freshman year, but because of a horse getting hurt rather badly at the stables, his parents hadn't been able to drive him, so here he was, arriving late.
As they bumped down the rutted driveway to the main office, John looked out at the rainbow of horses all around the road. This was a great place to be, he decided, and he would find some way to work things out here. As his mother stopped in front of a stately brick building, John jumped out of the car and ran around to the back, to the trailer they had pulled all of the way up to Kentucky. Before he could open the ramp, though, his mother had called out, "Go check in first, find out where to put Lilja." He grimaced, but complied, walking to the office.
Once inside, he looked around until the secretary's attention fell on him. He smiled and introduced himself, and once she had given him his information, room key, and a map, he excused himself. He wanted to work with Lilja before it started to rain, but that didn't seem probable if he didn't hurry up now.
