Wandering through the doors of Blue Ridge Animal Shelter with a sense of jittery curiosity, Sage approached the front desk and spoke with the plump, cheerful looking older woman behind it who had been working at the computer.
The two struck up some pleasant, light conversation about how the weather was getting colder as the days went by and how before too much longer the holidays would be on them before they even knew it. And though he enjoyed the small talk, on the inside he was growing impatient and was eager to see the animals.
For a few weeks now the stable hand had been considering coming and finding himself a companion for his off hours. Being settle in a place of his own could get very eerie at times with how quiet and empty his apartment felt, leaving Sage with a horrible lonely feeling in the afternoons and evenings. Especially when the weather got too bad for his horses to be out for too long.
So now that he had gotten a bit more established in BRRA and he had a steady pay check coming in, he figured it would be a good time to come down and look for someone to bring home with him.
Before too much longer he said his goodbyes to the woman at the front desk after she directed him back towards the kennels and the cat gym, leaving him to his own devices and giving him a chance to go and scope out his options.
He removed his brown pea-coat and his brilliant, molten blue-green wool beanie from his head, feeling much warmer being inside than he had on his drive here and headed straight for the cats.
For about a week now he had been thinking of what kind of pet he should get, and after ruling out most small animals and deciding that a dog was just too dependent for his tastes right now he settled on finding a feline that was independent enough to be on its own during the day time but who also wasn't apposed to sitting next to him in the evenings or curling up in his lap for a petting every now and then. In fact, Sage really didn't mind of his new friend turned out to be more of a room mate than a pet. He just wanted some love and company as well as someone who'd help to occupy his home and give him somebody to talk to, even if they didn't talk back.
It didn't take long for Sage to decide what cat he was interested in. Out of all of them it was the large long haired tabby tom sitting in the window staring him down with his wise, pale green eyes that instantly stole his heart.
Though he was a handsome sight the feline didn't move or make any noise, nor was he rambunctiously playing like some of his shelter mates in the gym. In other words, he wouldn't have caught the attention of most people who came in looking for a pet and would have easily blended into a crowd. He was plain even, if that's how you'd wish to put it, but something about him clicked and made Sage feel oddly drawn to him.
