Peter stared out of the window as the gates of Blue Ridge Academy came into view. His whole family had decided to come to drop him off, and honestly, he thought it was a bit of a facade on his parents' part. All of them knew that Blue Ridge Academy would only end up being his permanent home for the next couple years if he achieved, well, perfection.
The tall boy was crushed into the back seat, his knees practically up to his chin, but luckily it hadn't been a long car ride from the airport in Lexington. They'd all taken a plane from their home in England, and Peter had slept through most of it. His mare, Thimble, had been flown over the week earlier and was already at Blue Ridge. He couldn't wait to see her again, and even though it had only been a week without her, he'd missed riding her.
Peter's sister, Kate, had her nosed pressed against the window, as it had been since they landed. She was thrilled to be in the United States, and was even more excited to see Blue Ridge. Peter knew that she'd been scheming to apply there herself soon, and wanted to go there desperately. Looking up to the front seat, his parents sat silent, his father driving, and his mother reading a booklet on Blue Ridge Riding Academy that she'd gotten in the mail. Peering over her shoulder he glimpsed at the words prestigious and excellence before sitting back with a sigh. Yes, Blue Ridge Academy would be a lot of work, but it would be worth it if he could manage to stay.
The car pulled to a stop, and Kate nearly jumped out of her seat. Peter's border collie, Lacey, raised her head, and her tail began to wag. She'd been laying between him and Kate for most of the ride, and clearly wanted to get out. The family got out of the car, and Peter brought Lacey out too, remembering that Blue Ridge was very animal friendly. They made their way up the walk in a procession, Kate skipping in front, Peter and Lacey behind, and finally, Mr. and Mrs. Holden walking behind. They entered the main office, and Peter got his keys and room number. His parents moved all of his luggage up to the room, while Peter and Kate walked down to the White Oak Barn where Thimble was staying. And for the first time, Peter felt free.
