Personality>> Born and raised in the heart of Montana, Leslie loves the fresh mountain air, riding with the ranch hands to bring in the cows and her Mom’s home cooking. Too bad she’s been tossed into the middle of Kentucky with a bunch of stuck up girls who think they’re better than everyone else. With such an incredible distance between her and home and her longing to return, Leslie’s “grin and bear it” attitude is being put to the test.
Leslie is a lively young girl of sixteen. She is friendly, and is happiest around people. Even in stressful or difficult situations, she rarely feels the need to be alone. She gains comfort through company. Leslie is typically smiling. She believes that it is important to make the most of what you’re given, and she tries her best to make the most of her own life. Leslie is moderately intelligent, and does well in school. What she lacks in intelligence, she makes up for with hard work and logic. Despite her outward friendliness, Leslie loves to debate and does not like to lose. Her friends often find themselves in long, heated discussions when they think differently from her. Those who get on her bad side find out quickly what a firecracker she can be. In the end, however, Leslie is just a simple country girl who loves horses and people and wants to live her life to the fullest.

Appearance>> Leslie is a pretty young girl with a head full of light blonde hair and intense, almond shaped hazel eyes. She has a slim, athletic build and is toned from physical labor. Her skin is tanned due to the amount of time she spends working outside. She typically wears blue jeans and a T-shirt throughout the day, and doesn’t spend much time on makeup. When the occasion does call for a nicer ensemble, she dawns a pair of heeled boots, one of her few nicer shirts and applies some mascara and lip gloss sparingly. In general, she doesn’t ever look “sloppy,” but casual. Even her work jeans fit her nicely, and she prefers not to swim in any of her clothes.

Full History>> On a cold, snowy day in central Montana, a baby girl was born. She was not born in a hospital, or with the help of a doctor. The snow was so thick and the wind so strong that any chance of getting a mile from home safely was impossible. And so, on a frigid March day, when perhaps the weather should have been getting milder in anticipation of spring, Leslie Isabella Brookes was born in a small wooden home miles from civilization, with snow and hail beating against the windows. Perhaps it was inevitable that she would grow to hate the cold.
Leslie’s family owned a small cattle ranch, and made a small, humble living off of it. Leslie, more often called Izzy because of her middle name, grew up on the back of a horse, and was helping her big brother Jared, her elder by three years, with barn chores as soon as she could lift a pitchfork. At the age of seven, her parents bought her Sadie. Sadie was her very first horse, a chestnut pony with flaxen points. She and Sadie were perfectly matched, and soon they were romping through the countryside.
Although they didn’t make much, her family always made enough to put food on the table. And it was good food. Her mama’s cooking was the best she’d ever tasted. They sat down every night to a wonderful family dinner, and woke up each morning to the best blueberry pancakes in the entire state of Montana – or so it seemed! Leslie never had much in the way of clothes. Her few pairs of blue jeans and her beat up T-shirts were just fine for working on the ranch. And she didn’t go out with her friends often enough to need more than a few nice outfits.
By the age of thirteen, Leslie was quite obviously outgrowing her childhood pony. And though she’d miss riding her, and vowed to visit her every single day, Leslie was in love with the new horse that she was given for her birthday. Hawk was a handsome, sleek bay Quarter Horse gelding. He was a tad over sixteen hands tall and had four tall white stockings and a wide blaze. Of course, he wasn’t just for fun. Leslie’s parents insisted that she and Hawk join the hands on their cattle drives and help out as much as they could.
Leslie and Jared, often partners when herding cattle, decided to put their skills to use. They were an unbeatable penning team in the local rodeos, and Leslie and Hawk were made to barrel race. It wasn’t until Leslie was halfway through her second year of high school that her mother discovered Blue Ridge Academy. A man who had seen her ride a particularly good barrel round had suggested it to them. Leslie hadn’t taken him seriously, but her mother had.
And so Leslie bought an English saddle and took up the reins with both hands and Hawk responded wonderfully, both of them learning as quickly as they could. When she rode for Blue Ridge, she was almost afraid that she hadn’t made it. Hawk had startled at the judges’ station and she lost her stirrups. She was instantly a cowgirl again, one handing her reins and letting her legs hang long, sitting out his bucks like she would back in Montana, not like a refined Kentucky equestrian. But apparently, they had been impressed enough to not only accept her, but to offer her enough financial aid that she could afford to go.
And so, at the age of sixteen, Leslie and Hawk set out for Kentucky, hoping to make something of themselves in order to continue providing for their family.

Personality>> Layla is a high-energy dog who loves to play. She loves being with her owner, Leslie, enjoys chasing just about anything and likes going for walks. Layla gets along well with other dogs, but can be a pest to those who don’t want to play. She often tries to “herd” people as if they’re sheep. Luckily, this makes her an excellent addition to a cattle ranch. She finds the confining atmosphere of Blue Ridge upsetting, and misses following Leslie into the barn, but is happy to do anything for her owner.
History>> Layla was brought home by Leslie when she was only a few months old. Leslie had found her in a cage in the middle of one of the hay fields, and immediately took her in, outraged that anyone could leave such a precious animal to die. Her mother agreed that she could keep Layla, but encouraged her to train her to help herd the cattle. Since Layla turned out to be a purebred Australian Shepherd, that didn’t turn out to be an issue. There was no question, however, that Layla would go with Leslie to Blue Ridge. They would both hate being separated more than anything in the world.
