Soft music filled the cab of the red 2002 Silverado and soothed both females inside it. The driver was a pretty blonde, her hair braided down her back, laying almost stiffly against her blue polo shirt. She hummed along with the song, not really paying attention to it, but letting the familiar voice of Alan Jackson wash over her nervous body.
Beside her in the passenger seat, a red ball of fur was curled up so tightly that Hope couldn't tell where the little dog's head started or her tail began. "Silly Joker girl," the words were whispered, but the heeler's head popped up from the middle of the red mass and her pink tongue rolled out of her mouth. A high pitched yip escaped the young dog's mouth and her master smiled.
Slowing down and exiting into the Blue Ridge Academy's drive, Hope took a deep calming breath. She was here to start over, get away from her past and all that it held. Teaching here, she might just be able to pull it off. Maybe.
Seeing a parking space next to another truck and trailer, she pulled in expertly, having known how to maneuver a truck and trailer since she was a little girl. Behind her in the three horse angle haul, a thump of impatience rang across the grounds. "Lovely. Just hold on a second you two," she muttered under her breath as if the two mares in the trailer could hear her.
"Alright, Joke. Let's do this," she smiled as the dog yipped again and scrambled onto her lap, wagging her bright red tail and looking from the window to the young woman's face and back again. Hope swung the door open and let the red devil jump out, watching in amusement as she hit the pavement and spun in three quick circles while the blonde climbed out of her pickup.
She was wearing expensive clothes, but they weren't new, just her schooling outfit. Paddock boots and half chaps hid the bottoms of her tan johds and a thin brown belt held those to her slim hips.
Walking back to the windows of her trailer, she undid the latch and opened the heavy doors so that her two mares could stick their heads out of the confining trailer. First was the dark, dished face of her baby. "Hey Gracey girl," she rubbed her fingers behind the roan paint's ears, urging her to flap her lower lip in pleasure.
Next, she hauled open the second window to reveal a polar opposite, yet still beautiful chestnut mare. Her broad Warmblood head bobbed up and down, her stripe catching in the weak winter sun for a moment. "Lucy Lou, how are you hun?" she stroked her dressage horse for a moment, and then decided that she wanted her sweater from her pick up and left both horses to observe their surroundings.
Sweater on and zipped up snugly, Hope turned to make sure that Joker was still at her heels and started towards the nearby Main Office. Her little red shadow padding beside her, panting and glancing around quickly in the manner of the well bred cattle dog she was.
Pulling open the door, Hope motioned for Joker to sit, "Stay here Joker," she reinforced the command before moving into the warmth of the building.
The lady at the front desk handed her a key to her apartment and have her a map, welcoming her to her new home. Thanking her, Hope couldn't help but think that maybe this was the new leaf she had been searching for, she could loose herself in her work and start her life from scratch.
