So, my mom's paint Warrior hadn't been ridden in a good 7 months. Just becuase I have been off at college, and weather hasn't been good, and he is prone to bad feet.
But, today, I decided to ride him. He is going on 5 now, we've had him since he was like 2 1/2. I rode him a lot when we first got him, then my mom had an accident on him, and he turned into a big pet while she was healing. Then, just never really got messed with much.
I wanted to take things slow though, as, you know, just like people, you get lazy and don't wanna get back into the swing of things. If I pushed him too far, he would be expected to blow up. So, I tied him up and started grooming him. At first he didn't like it, was antsy, hissy. But then settled down and I got these wonderful pictures of him all pretty:
(and for the record, that pole is cemented in the ground, so it's sturdy)
Then, I reintroduced saddle and blanket, letting him smell it, and rub it on him. He didn't even flinch when I put the blanket on or the saddle. I let him stand with a few minutes just on him. My mom was home, so, instead of putting a bit in his mouth, and I just got on him and had her lead him. My little colt started nickering as we walked off. Haha, he was prolly wondering what in the world was going on! Warrior was a bit flighty, but it's really windy here, and that always causes smells and everything else. Over all, he was so good! Tomorrow I plan on doing it again, only, riding him with no leader. The only 'bad' thing he did, was paw out at the ground when he got bored. I HATE that. In cases like that, the quickest thing to do, I was holding a curry, and whacked his shoulder with the leg he was pawing, and said 'Eh!" Then the next time, I said "Eh" first when he started, and then whacked him. The last time he did it, all i had to say was "Eh!" and he stopped.
I'm not gonna lie, since a bad accident, I have been scared of horses, scared of getting hurt, but I keep on going. I couldn't have even thought about getting on Warrior today, if God wasn't with me. I always pray to keep the horses and me safe.
And Cara, I don't remember if you did a evaluation on him or not, so, go ahead! Anyone can =) Wouldn't bother me a bit. I love to hear feed back from everyone!
