Katherine stood in the entrance to her barn, a simple black nylon halter and lead in her hand. The night before she had sent a message to Cara-Jean asking the girl to meet her down to the barn at 0800 hours and now that it was a little after seven-thirty, she was waiting for the girl to arrive.
She had recently found a student to work with Cadfael, she felt it was time to find someone to work with Merle. The pretty little Rocky Mountian Horse would need to be taught everything, but the woman was sure that the girl would be able to handle it. She just hoped that she wasn't going to seem to be pushing the girl too soon.

Cara rubbed her face as headed down to the barn. She was dressed in spotless white jodhpurs and a yellow polo shirt, her damp hair was pulled back into its customary French braid, but doubled over today rather than a bun. She had just finished another session in the gym, which had been cut short due to her summoning, but a good session nonetheless.
She dropped a curtsy as she arrived at the barn and saw Miss Carr standing there.

Katherine shook her head when Cara arrived. "I so wish you wouldn't do that." She commented about the curtsy. "As you may have noticed, we have recently got a couple of new school horses that can't be ridden. That day that you came in to ask for another mount because Titania's leg had heat, I asked Pel if she could take on the responsibility of helping to back Cadfael. If you feel that you are up to it, I would like you to take on the job of teaching Merle." She held out the halter and lead toward the girl, taking the fact that the girl hadn't yet spoke up as a good sign. "Her parents did everything so I don't mind what you train her in."

"Thank you, Ma'am." Were the girl's only words as she took the halter and lead. waiting for the woman to walk to her office, Cara made her way down the barn aisle, stopping into the tack room quickly to swap her paddock boots with long boots, and to the stall where the Rocky Mountain breed's nose could be seen over the door.
Cara drew in a shaky breath as she pushed her lips together, this stall had been the one where Phoenix had been housed. A stall that the teen had spent so much time in. "Hello pretty girl." She greeted the pony softly as she opened the door. "No. Back." She drew up her energy level and pointed at a spot behind the young mare. Okay, the pony didn't back away, but she no longer tried to walk through the girl either.
Cara remembered the silver dapple from the auction house. It had seemed so long ago, that day when she had considered purchasing the mare herself as a project. She was so glad she hadn't as young Merle would be in the same predicament as Arlette and Phoenix. Slipping the halter on the mare's delicate head, she turned around and led the mare from her stall and down to the round pen.
Once inside the pen, Cara took the halter off the sweet little pony and stepped back. This was her way of telling Merle that she was free to go and have a look around. Best let the pony work out that there was nothing that was going to eat her here before they started working. She looked at the mare's chocolate-brown body color and flaxen mane and tail, the characteristic colouration for her breed. Here she was, once again working with a pony who had a horse breed as far as books were concerned and had a characteristic colouration with a flaxen mane and tail to boot.
Stepping into the middle of the arena. She drew herself up to her full height - okay for 4 feet and 11 inches wasn't a lot - she caught the mare's attention as she slapped the lead rope against her boot. Now that she had the mare's attention, since Merle was standing up the fence, turned toward the center of the pen, looking at the girl with open interest, Cara decided that it was time to teach the mare the most important lesson she would ever need to know. That the human in the middle of the pen would always mean safety.
Slapping her boot again she stepped toward the pony's hindquarters, nodding her head as the silver dapple pony moved off, trotting around the outside of the pen. Her inside ear was already pointed toward the human, so Cara knew that this wasn't going to take long, there were no trust issues as far as this equine was concerned.
