As the sun began to break over the horizon to a new day, Jude strode into the lounge. He was shirtless and only donning his plaid sleeping pants, and was carrying his favorite book to read. Small,square reading glasses sat plopped on the top of his head.The lack of sleep he had been having was evident in his face and eyes, and he was hoping that reading would relax his mind enough to sleep again. The tossing and turning in his bed certainly was not helping at all. He glanced sleepily at the time, and mentally groaned at the flashing numbers on the clock. It read slightly after 4 in the morning, and Jude knew at once it was going to be a long day.

Plopping himself down on the couch,Jude looked around the room at the stillness of it. Normally the lounge was bustling with energy and students, but at this insane time of the morning, he was the only person there. Sighing, he flipped open his book to where he left off last, and pulled his reading glasses down over his face.

The words all looked like a jumbled mess to him, and his mind quickly wandered to what was going on with his life. Honestly, he felt like his life was at a complete stand still, and he was not sure of the next move he wanted to make. He was completely in love with Serena, but truthfully, he had not seen her in a few days. Quickly whipping out his cell phone, he sent her a quick text, hoping it was on silent. Good morning beautiful, I hope you have a wonderful day!, the text read. Smiling, he slipped his phone back into his pocket and looked down at the book, beginning to read slowly.

Serena had been up before the break of dawn. The nights still made her long for the crisp morning air of the English countryside. For her there was nothing more wonderful than riding a ridge to watch the sun come up, and that is what she had done today. After she had put away Psych, she had spent some time observing the two wild ones in their paddock. She would be spending time watching the horses and observing their behaviour, before she started the serious work.

When she got to the outside of the lounge her phone vibrated, and she saw that she got a text from Jude. Serena smiled and opened the lounge door quietly. She saw Jude...reading?He didn't seem like the reading type, and mentally stored away that piece of info. Quietly she walked up to him, and whispered quietly in his ear. Morning to you too handsome. Serena walked around the chair, and gave Jude of her smiles. She knew that he had a heart attack when she spoke to him, but it was just the way she was.

Hearing the lounge door swing open, Jude looked up to see Serena walking into the room. His small, reading glasses stayed plopped upon his face as he watched her enter the room. Honestly, he was amazed to see her awake at this time of the morning, but he was quite relieved to see her face early in the morning. Serena walked across the room, and whispered in his ear quickly, before beginning to walk circles around the chair he was sitting in.

Throwing the book he was reading aside, he stood slightly and grabbed a hold of Serena's waist, wrapping one full arm around it firmly. Sitting back down into the chair, he pulled Serena back down towards him and onto his lap. Smiling, he leaned down and kissed her cheek softly, before beginning to speak. "Hey baby, I've missed you lately! How have you been?" He rested his chin on her shoulder, letting his slightly stubbled face brush against hers.

Serena made herself a bit more comfortable on Jude’s lap, and breathed in his scent. The early morning was her favourite time of the day, mainly because it resembled home more than anything else, but also the colours the sun made in the sky was beautiful to watch and paint. Though she had another sketch that she wanted to do, and he was underneath her. Serena just didn’t want to get up and get her sketch book, so instead she just snuggled into the crook of his arm. “I’m well. The new arrivals are also making progress.” It was true. Just yesterday Ahearn had trusted her enough to allow her to touch him briefly. For some that may seem like nothing, but to Serena it meant the world.

Serena knew that Jude was built, but seeing him with him his shirt off just reaffirmed that. She took one of his hands, and started playing with his fingers. She loved his hands, so perfect, and she laced her fingers through his. “What are you reading?” she asked, very interested. Serena didn’t even know that he read, and this morning she did. She did learn something every day.

Jude kept his arm wrapped firmly around Serena's waist, enjoying the warmness and closeness of her body compared to his. His face was beginning to sprout facial hair, the result of him being lazy and not shaving in a few days. He hoped that Serena would not mind this stubble growing in, and kept his chin placed gently upon her shoulder. Closing his eyes slightly, he listened to her explain how the new arrivals were making progress. He was at much more ease now that she was sitting with him, and he could actually feel himself beginning to doze off while listening to her voice and feeling her warmness.

Once she spoke about how well the new arrivals were doing, Jude opened his eyes slightly and a smile spun onto his face. Her big heart was part of the reason he loved her, and he knew now that they had totally saved each other from each others past. He pressed his lips against her cheek once more, and then moved his face to respond. "I'm glad they are coming along.. that's why I love you, Serena. You have a big heart, and always want to help as much as you can."

Resting on his head on her shoulder again, he allowed his blue eyes to close slightly again. Serena had started to play with his hand and laced her fingers through his, and he allowed her to move it around. Opening his eyes again, he lifted their hands towards his lips, and kissed each one of her fingers. When she asked about what he was reading, he paused before explaining "It's called A Gate at The Stairs, by Lorrie Moore. It's about a coming of age of a young woman following 9/11, and her descent into adulthood through loss and grief. My English teacher recommended it.." Smiling, he looked at her and relaxed. He was completely at ease now, and his restless mind was now calm.

Serena loved the rough feel of Jude's chin. The guy obviously hadn't been shaving, but she didn't care. She was with Jude. The one guy she was actually serious about, and she knew that it wasn't some teenage fling. She smiled when he spoke. I love you too. Jude was just so wonderful to her, and actually understood what was going on.

She shivered slightly, as the room was slightly chilly, but warmed up again quick enough. Serena listened as he spoke about the book, and quickly tried to register if she read it before. She knew she hadn't. Her type of books were the ones that involved Science and a lot of it. The fact that she proved most people wrong about the brainy side of her was, well, funny. Everybody thought her the dumb blond. Totally untrue. It sounds good. Serena knew that she most probably won't end up reading it, but it was a 'different stroked for different folks' type of thing.

Jude was totally engrossed and content, sitting with Serena on an early morning. The sky was producing beautiful colors, and the stillness sound of the morning was comforting. Not many people were awake at this time, but Jude could faintly hear horses rustling in their stalls, and whinnying loudly for the new day. It was so relaxing, and Jude remained with his eyes closed, enjoying everything about the morning. The lack of sleep that he did not get, however, was catching up with him quickly. He was finding it harder and harder to open his eyes each time, and could feel himself slowly drifting off to dream land. He did not want to leave this moment, though, and thought quickly about what would make this morning even better.

Opening his eyes, a thought came to his idea rapidly, and he decided to act upon his thoughts. He lifted Serena into a standing position, before standing up as well. He slid his reading glasses up from his face to the top of his head, and smiled quickly at Serena. Taking her face in his hands, he kissed her softly and quickly, before whispering quietly in her ear. "I will be back please don't leave."

Rushing up to his room quickly, Jude grabbed a few of his blankets off the bed, along with some pillows, and a sweatshirt for Serena. Going back into the lawn that was around the building, he layed one blanket on the ground, and put another on top of if, folding it back. He placed a few pillows at the top of the blanet, and placed another blanket on the side. He layed down his sweatshirt on top of it, and then headed back into the building. Taking Serena's hand swiftly, he walked back outside, and let go of her hand, laying down in the blankets.

Serena just happened to glance at Jude. The poor thing was busy nodding off constantly, and she just smiled. Lack of sleep was something she was used to. It had been her friend for the last two years. Every day since her father had died, she had woken up early. Somehow the morning light reminded her of him. Her father had always been up just before dawn, and Serena felt closer to her father when she was also awake at that time. Silently she counted the days. Something suddenly felt different to her. Once again, she tried counting the days. Still, it just didn’t make sense.

When Jude decided to get up, she shifted her weight so that she wouldn’t block him. Her face held a quizzical look, and Serena didn’t know what was going on. Jude returned soon after, and silently took her hand. She followed without hesitation, being truly curious about what was going on. Out on the lawn was some form of bed, pillows and sweatshirt. “Um, I hope you realise that I am wearing a jacket.” Though the colourful hoodie was one of her favourites, the origin was from her ex-boyfriend, Jamie.

Serena settled on the blankets, and sat cross-legged. The lawn overlooked the barns, and a faint sound of horses waking up for the day. Psych was one of those being so vocal. He was always called an alarm clock back home, as no groom could sleep in when Psych was around. “By the way. What is today’s date?”

Jude had settled comfortably into the blankets, the rest and peacefulness of the early morning being a comfort to him. Looking up at the early morning sky, he watched as the sky continued to produce breath taking colors. Lazily, he traced one color with his eyes until he could not see it any further, then moved onto another color. Serena appeared to be uneasy and anxious about something, and he saw her sit on the blankets out of the corner of his eye.

The colors and the glimpse of Serena sitting all faded away though when his eyes slowly slid shut. Almost immediately, Jude was thrust into the imaginative domains of the dream world.He could hear the horses waking and the other wise stillness of the morning in the background, but he was definitely not seeing horses in this world.

Hearing Serena speak, and realizing it must be directed at him, he poked open his eyes slightly. Looking over at her, the question she asked resounded in his head, and he thought about it briefly before answering it. "It's.. July.. 19th.. and it's also my birthday.." He paused. "Why? What's up?"

Serena sat there thinking about the days. Could it really be two years today? It just didn't make any sense. Had so much time passed already? The sun made the clouds colourful, almost showing the colour's in her life. They were happy colours. She knew Jude was looking at her in worry, at she reprimanded herself mentally that she had to be such a deep thinker so early in the morning. I'm sorry. I didn't know it's your birthday. It was the truth, as her diary held a different type of anniversary.

Thinking a few minutes longer, she realised that her calculations had been correct, and it was in fact today. Serena bit the inside of her bottom, trying to fight back the tears. Nothing's wrong. It's just that today, two years ago, I lost my dad. He had been such a big part of her life for 15 years, and for two she had been without him. It may have been two years, but the pain was still there, same as the day he left.

Serena knew her mother would phone later, at a time that suited them both. They would talk, and think back to the good ol' days, and all that jazz. The same as it always was, yet this time she also had Jude to help her with everything. To be sunlight in her sometimes dark days.

Jude watched as Serena's face filled with worry when he told her the date. The sky was producing beautiful shades of pinks, oranges and yellows and the sight of it was a peaceful surroundings. The morning had been extremely peaceful and he was enjoying the stillness of the early morning hours. He looked over towards Serena once more, arching an eyebrow and looking up towards the sky.

"Yeah it's my birthday. I'm getting so old now.." He was trying to make her worry disappear by being humorous. When she continued to look worried, then worry really began to flow throughout his body. He had no idea what she was thinking about, but he also figured that she would tell him when she was ready. Leaning back, he looked up towards the sky again and the seemingly painted colors. He could hear more and more horses awakening and more action going on in the barn. His horses would probably be demanding food soon, but Jude was enjoying this time with Serena to much. Well..he was enjoying it until now..

When Serena confessed to what was bothering her, his face dropped and he looked towards her quickly. He watched as she tried to fight the tears back, obviously not wanting to break down again. Sitting up quickly, he stood, walked towards her and sat back on the blankets again. Slipping an arm around her shoulders, he looked at her and placed a hand on her cheek. "Oh.. I'm soo sorry.."

Serena was so lost in her own thoughts that she didn't catch Jude's humor. It was just one of those things, and usually she would've laughed. For once she wished that she could see into his mind, and hear what he was thinking. Why did she always have to mess things up? Serena felt Jude sit next to her, envelope her with his arm, and she leaned into him.

The warm hand on her cheek made her realise that someone did care, and that a relapse into her old ways would be destructive. Once she knew that her tears would not flow today, she dared to open her eyes. The sky had a melody of colours. Each one more breathtaking than the last one. Is this what happiness felt like? Serena decided that instead of being sad at the loss that she had suffered, she would celebrate it, and spend her day with Jude. As soon as she realised this, a wave of warmth washed over her, giving her peace.

So, what are thinking my love? she asked, gathering the courage to ask.

Jude was taken back by the ease at which Serena decided to accept that today was the final day she saw her father, two years ago. She opened her eyes briefly to look up at the captivating sky, and her entire body seemed to be at peace with everything. Her face was peaceful, and the energy she was giving off put Jude at peace as well. He knew then that Serena was incredible. She had suffered so much loss and pain, and the tears were not streaming down her face.

He kept his one arm wrapped around her contently, and the other hand rested peacefully on her cheek. He closed his eyes slightly, taking in this moment with Serena, loving that he was here with her. Sighing, he reopened his eyes and shot a quick smile in her direction. When Serena asked him what he was thinking about, he paused and gathered his thoughts before speaking.

"I was thinking about how incredible you are, I mean you suffered so much loss and still, here you are, not a tear shed. I was also thinking how glad I was that you are here now, and I wouldn't want to share my birthday with anyone else."

Serena looked at Jude as he spoke. Was that how he saw her? Was that how others saw her? It seemed strange, but she remembered that her father also saw her that way, once upon a time. He also told her that she was his little star, incredible to him. Serena had always believed him. Even if I'm not there, I'll always be with you. was one of the last things her father had said to her. One of those things she had never forgotten.

Suddenly the weariness of the early morning settled on her, and Serena stifled a yawn. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else, and with no one else, she said. The feelings she had for Jude was different. Serena had never felt this way about anyone else before, and was glad that she had found such a guy as Jude. Deciding to make herself comfortable, Serena lay down, resting her head in Jude's lap, and watching the clouds disappear slowly as the sun came into full view.

Life was just so beautiful at the moment. For once she was actually happy, and not just pretending to be. Quietly, Serena dozed off, letting sweet slumber consume her.

Jude smiled as Serena talked and explained how she would not want to be with anyone but him. Serena was yawning quite a bit now, and Jude was feeling the effects of the morning as well. After she yawned, he would yawn quickly, and then tried to hide in the yawns. Serena had since settled down and closed her eyes. Jude leaned back on his hands, not trying to disturb her much but also trying to get himself comfortable as well.

He closed his eyes quickly, before feeling a vibration from his phone going off in his pocket. Quickly, he slid his phone out of the pocket and read the text message that was on the screen. It was from his mother, and a frown appeared slightly on his face when he read the contents.

Hey honey, Happy Birthday! I hope you are having a good day. Your father and I made reservations at Blue Waters tonight at 8. Bring a friend if you would like! & dress nicely

Jude sighed and quickly typed a short response, before sliding the phone back into his pocket. He would definitely ask Serena to come along, but was unsure how she would respond.
