The blonde haired male stared through the darkened shades on the road ahead. Driving in the States was an awkward thing for him, as well as the whole steering wheel on the left hand side. The windows were open and allowed in the refreshing air. On the passenger seat was a dog, and so was one on the back seat. The two Australian Shepherds really filled up the truck, but he loved them and couldn't leave them at home.

Alex's horses were still in quarantine, just a safety precaution, but would be shipped to the Academy in a week or two. The sudden change in atmosphere had caused Alex to come down with the flu, but it wasn't too bad. The Academy loomed up ahead, and Alex turned off for the Main Office. Everything was neat, and in it's place. What he had seen of the barns had also impressed him.

He parked the truck and opened the doors for Malaik and Lacuna to exit. "Malaik! Lacune! Hiel! " he called to the dogs. Even though he was English he preferred speaking Dutch. Alex walked into the office, but saw no one there, so he settled in a chair, picking up a magazine. The dogs settled around his feet, and fell asleep. Their even breathing filling the office.

Andy drove the black ford truck to the Blue Ridge Riding Academy. This was going to be the school he’s teaching at. The boarding school was new to him; he had never been to a boarding school. He knew there was a first time for everything but this was one of the things he thought he would never experience. Of course this twenty-two year old wasn’t going to be a student he was going to be a teacher. This made him more nerves only because he didn’t want to let his students fail because of him.

His kitten was on his lap sleeping, and his puppy was in the passenger seat looking out the window at his new surroundings. Andy took one hand off the steering wheel of the truck leaving his one had one it. He then petted Crystal on her tiny little kitten head then placed his hand back on the steering wheel. Andy loved both his little balls of fluff to death. Andy also loved his horses all four of them. He’s newest one was the three week old foul who was in the trailer that the truck was hauling. With the little guy he had to stop every hour to feed him. Of course Andy didn’t mind but it did make the trip a bit longer.

Andy arrived at the school. To him it was the most amazing thing he ever saw. Other than watching Ford, the three year old foul be born. Andy parked the truck near the school’s main office area. He picked up Crystal and Samurai and hoped out of the truck. Andy placed Samurai down on the ground and held on to his leach. Crystal stayed in his arms because she wasn’t wearing a leach. He walked in to the waiting area of the main office. Andy heard Samurai barking and felt him pull on the leach. Andy looked in the direction the little dog was pulling at. Andy saw that there was other man sitting in the waiting area and then saw his two dogs.

Andy nodded his head in a friendly gesture to say hi. Andy pick up the little barking dog and whispered “Samurai be quite” He knew that it wasn’t going to do any good. “I’m sorry, he’s a bit excited” Andy said. He walked over to one of the free chairs; keeping both the kitten and the puppy in his hands.

Alex paged through the magazine. He specially read the long distance articles, as that was his forte. There something about being on the trails for long periods of time, very rarely anyone around you. There was a certain peace, being alone with your horse. Most people found it to be boring, or their wasn't any point to it, but endurance was one of the most grueling equestrian sports around.

The two Shepherds were the first to notice the newcomer and barked eagerly. "Malaik! Lacune! Doe zwijgen!! " he told the dogs, and they quietened, but their tails beat a rapid tattoo on the floor. The man had entered with two small pets,one being a very small puppy, the type that one could step on by accident, and not notice it. Lacuna cocked her head at the strange dog, but did nothing. A faint growl escaped Malaik's maw however. "Hello, it's okay. Malaik here was also like that at puppy age."

Andy looked at the two dogs. It looked like they’re both Australian Shepherds. Crystal just stayed in his hand not wanting to move. Her ears were up, looking at the strangers, both the dogs and the man. Andy smiled; animals and children were about the only things that would make him smile.

Of course he will laugh and smirk but that’s it; it’s rare for you to see him smile. Andy kissed Crystal on the top of her head; he loved all his pets to death and beyond. Now only if he could find a woman he would love just as much as his pets. But he was young and didn’t quite care if he had a woman in his life right now. He was where he wanted to be in life and that’s all that mattered to him now.

“Is it ok if I put him down? I know some dogs aren’t good with little dogs” Andy asked and stated. He didn’t know much about the breed so he wasn’t going to take chances. Andy looked around; he hoped that the office lady wasn’t going to take long.

He had a foal waiting outside in the trailer. Andy didn’t want the little guy waiting long; and he wanted to get him comfortable in his new home. He looked out the window to the trailer where Ford waited inside. “How long do you think it’s going to take for someone to notice where waiting here?” Asked Andy; now looking at the other man. He was trying to make the time go by faster. He figured causal talk never hurt anyone.

“Oh! By the way my name is Andy, Andy Gabriels. I’m going to be teaching home ec and creative cooking” Said Andy. He might as well introduce himself and it was another topic to talk about. He looked over at the desk where the office lady should be and sighed.

Alex watched Malaik with a wary eye. For some reason the Shepherd just wasn't settling, but he couldn't expect him to in just a few short days. His mind wandered to his three Arabs in Lexington. He missed them, and he couldn't wait to get on the trails with them. This was so different to Amsterdam, and it would take a while for the gang to settle. Even now Alex still had the flu. It was his body's way of saying that the change had been to quick.

Malaik growled a little, showing teeth, but Alex nudged him softly. "Malaik. Gedraag u. Wij weet iedereen dat u de baas bent," he said quietly to the dog. Malaik didn't look happy, but obeyed. Lacuna just watched the stranger with a happy face. She was the friendly one. The one that always had a lot of energy. She made a good trail dog. "You can put him down. Malaik is all bark and no bite," he added to the strangers question.

In the meantime, Alex had put the magazine down. His mother had hammered manners into his skull by the time he was ten. He knew his place, but Varsity had allowed him some freedom. Another reason he chose the Academy is that he had a friend working here. He had met James Cole while studying, and their love of horses had made them firm friends. "I'm not sure, but I'm not hanging around much longer. Their someone I need to go see in the Broodmare barn."

Alex had never been much of a talker, but it would depend on who he was with. The female's loved him cause of he looked good, but he really didn't care. "Alexander Compton. Biology." Alex noticed Andy look over at the desk, and allowed himself a small smile. "She's on a tea break," he answered. He stood up, actually showing his full height. He was tall, but he liked that just fine.

Andy looked at the dogs and saw the one was showing his teeth. Rethinking about putting Samurai down, but the little dog didn’t really give me the option. He was trying as hard as he could to get out of his hand. He heard Alex reply and Andy put the puppy down. He petted the nicer looking one on the head. Then place Crystal on his lap so she had more room to move around. Andy nodded to what he said about the one dog; although the man said his dog wouldn’t hurt Samurai Andy still kept a close eye on the little dog.


Andy wondered what language he was speaking to the dogs. He knew there was only one way to know for sure and that was asking him. But Andy wasn’t the type of person to ask a question like that. Andy usually just shrugged it off. This time was no exemption he said quiet, like he did most of the time. Being the mysterious guy everyone knew him as. He was more of a listener. It didn’t seem like this guy was much of a talker himself.

Andy looked at him and raised his eyebrows. “I see, well I probably would be here till the lady gets back. I have a foal that needs a stall….” He said looking out the window to the trailer. He didn’t know what else to say at this point. He wanted the foal to be comfortable before he was. That was another thing with his pets they came first. Seeing how they can’t really help themselves to everything, this is how Andy saw it at least. Andy looked at the little puppy who was now trying to catch the one dog’s tail.

Andy nodded when Alex introduced himself and said what class he taught. He looked down at the kitten in his lap that had gotten bored of the dogs and the stranger; she was now curled up and sleeping. Crystal wasn’t one for new comers and often just ignored them. Andy thought this was just a bit strange for a kitten to do. But he had guessed she was like this because of how many new comers she had seen and gotten use to it. Andy looked up at Alex and nodded “Figures” he said with a sigh. Andy didn’t want the little foal waiting too long.
