Cara worried her lower lip with her teeth as she walked toward the office that belong to Dafydd Rees. She wore a simple skirt suit and in her hand was clutched the envelope that she had received a couple of days earlier.
The letter had been from the gymnastics federation, asking her to take part in a display of theirs in New York City. The letter had suggested that she speak with her legal guardian, and she thought that speaking with Mr Rees was much better than trying to convince Mr Andrews that she needed to go. She didn't professionally train in gymnastics anymore and getting an invitation like this was a really big thing, because it meant that someone had noticed her.
Standing at the office door, she raised her hand and rapped gently on the door.

Dafydd was bored. His finger clicked aimlessly against the mouse as he started yet another game of solitaire. He supposed he should be working on something a little more constructive, but he was just having one of those days. The days when you just want to crawl back into bed and sleep your life away, that sort of day. He sighed, feeling a glimmer of self pride as he won yet another game, and sat back in his chair. Right now, he wished he had some students to come and bother him with their problems, so that he wouldn't have to face up to his own. It was coming up to the anniversary of Jayden's death, only another month which he knew would fly by. When he thought of Jayden, he thought of Emma. And then the depression sets in once again, and he craves the alcoholic beverages he had not long been rehabilitated from. His head snapped up and he snarled quietly to himself, all thoughts of his past locked firmly away in the back of his mind.
Dafydd didn't have to wait long for company, the rasp on the door was becoming all the more familiar. Cara had something to say or ask him. He rose from his desk, and made his way to the door. As the handle turned, he wondered why she was coming to see him today. How can I help you today, Cara? he asked, stepping aside to let her into the room. Once she was in, he shut the door behind her. Icey, whom remembered the girl from their last meeting, thumped his thick tail against the ground but offered no more of a greeting. It was obviously his lazy day too. Dafydd moved back around to his desk, but couldn't bring himself to sit. Now that he was up, it seemed like a better place to be. Sitting in the comfortable chair would just make him sluggish all over again.

Cara was planning on what she was going to say in her head that she was more than a little startled when the door opened and she jumped backward. Ducking her head, she stepped past the man and into the office.
She waited until he was behind his desk again before she spoke up, choosing to remain on her feet and rising onto the balls of her feet as she once again thought over what she wanted to say.
"Oh." She stepped forward and placed the envelope she was holding on the desk in case Mr Rees wanted to have a read through the letter, she didn't need to look at it to know what it said. "Inside that envelope is a letter I received a couple of days ago from the Gymnastics Federation. They are holding a display next month and one of their members had seen me at the last competition I attended. They would like to know if I can attend their display in New York City." She pressed her lips together and chewed on the inside of her lips as she unconsciously bounced on the balls of her feet - kind of like how someone would drum their fingers on their thighs if they were sitting down. "They will arrange the travel, but I am guessing that I would need at least a Friday and Monday away from my academic classes." She pressed her tongue against her molars. "What I am here for is to ask if I may take the time off campus or not." She graced the man with one of the well rehearsed smiles she used during competitions, it looked genuine enough but wasn't completely real.

His eyebrows rose in shock as she began to speak. The fact that he hadn't had to coax anything out of her, pleasantly surprised him. But, as she carried on, he began to frown. He didn't really want her to leave campus while Mr.Andrews was still wandering around, looking for the opportunity to snatch her. He let her finish before answering what she had asked. He was about to refuse, but an idea struck him. You can go, but there is to be one condition. he ventured, without a doubt knowing she wouldn't like it. You are to be chaperoned. He said, with a little smile. He felt better knowing that she would have a staff member with her. He knew it couldn't be himself, he was temped to say his new Vice Principal, but he didn't know Cara well enough yet. Then, the perfect person sprung to mind. And it shall be Mr.Anwell. I'll tell him when I call him in for a meeting later. He beamed, proud at himself for solving it so quickly. He looked at Cara, waiting to see her reactions. He was growing fond of the youngster, by far the easiest to deal with, even if she did have the biggest problems. Oh, and of course, you shall have to get the work you miss from your teachers. He had no doubt she would, he knew how academically successful she was at the academy.

Forgetting herself for a moment, Cara beamed - her entire face glowed with excitement - when she was told she could go to NYC. "Thank you so much Mr Rees!" Her eyebrows arched when he said she would need a chaperon and she only just stopped herself from rolling her eyes. She had never before been chaperoned places, but there again she'd never had anyone care enough to think that she needed one. And at least with him selecting a chaperon for her, Mr Andrews couldn't volunteer himself.
She tipped her head to the side when Lee's name was mentioned. "That would be because I told you I had slipped to him about my past." It was a statement, not a question. "I have asked him to help me train for the event. Not that I thought you would say I could go, but because I need a spotter for the moves I do."
She nodded her head when classwork was mentioned. "I will ask the teachers if they can give me the work before I go so that I will have something to do while we aren't at Madison Square Garden."
Her smile grew again and her eyebrows bounced up and down, which she would be doing if she weren't as dignified as she was. "Again, thank you so much, Sir."
