Julianne brushed specks of lint off the front of her shirt, pausing to check her reflection in a window. She’d stopped over in a cheap roadside motel on the way over, and had been surprised to find only the cold tap in the shower worked. Hoisting her rucksack up onto one shoulder, Julianne took a deep breath and pushed the hair back from her face. For the first time today, she couldn’t shake the nervous fluttering in her stomach.
She opened the door and peered around it. The office was empty. Julianne chewed on her bottom lip, deciding to have a look around the place and come back later in the day. But something stopped her from leaving, and she paused in the doorway. Somewhere there was the rustle of paper and the muffled beep of a printer busily going about its business.
A frown crossed her face, and Julianne took a step forwards. Perhaps they didn’t hear me come in, she thought. “Excuse me...” she began, and then trailed off. Telling herself to stop being such a worrywart, Julianne cleared her throat and said a little more loudly this time, “Is there anybody there?”
