Richard Stone walked into his classroom carrying his briefcase as well as the assignments that the students had handed a couple of weeks ago. He had been remarkably impressed with the works that the students had put into their individual assignments - even the ones who hadn't read the instructions properly and had done an author that wasn't based in England. He placed everything on his desk and opened the case. Out of this he pulled the notes that he had compiled for the new topic, which he hoped would grab the attention of his students. Turning to the whiteboard, he picked up the black pen and started writing on the board Presidential Campaign Persuasive Speeches
This lesson covers presidential history, persuasive writing, Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and advertising techniques.
Objective: Students will pretend they are a presidential candidate from the list below and write an election speech (persuasive writing).
Speech Requirements: ·Must be 2-4 minutes long ·Must have note cards ·Must include a minimum of 5 important facts about this candidate. (May include: political beliefs, past political positions, environmental policies, etc.) ·Must have an aesthetically appealing visual aid ·May not use video camera but may use the computer for Power Point (this can be your visual aid)
Things to be identified: -Who they are and why they would be a good presidential candidate -Who the audience is and why they chose that audience (union workers, moms, etc.) -What need in Maslow's Needs is being met -What advertising techniques they are using to advertise themselves He stepped back and read what had been written on the board and nodded, making sure he had got everything down. He then went and sat behind his desk as he waited for the class to file in. Only then did he notice that there was already a student in the room.

Cara slipped into the room as Mr Stone was writing on the board. She silently crossed the room and sat down in her usual desk, got everything she needed out of her satchel and started to copy down everything that was written on the board. She knew that the teacher would hand out a sheet with it all printed on, but she liked to copy things down. Today, the girl was dressed in a black skirt suit, with a white shirt under the jacket and black ballet flats on her feet. Her hair was pulled back in the normal French braid/bun. Outfit: here

The student who'd been in the room even before Mr. Stone happened to be Jessica. Having become fed up with ending up arriving in lessons only just on time - or late - due to a really bad sense of direction and an inability to learn her way around the campus (which only got more irritating every time she ended up in slightly the wrong place) she'd resolved just to set off really early to everything. Of course, this meant that, when she remembered the way, she ended up really, really early, and ended up twiddling her thumbs in an empty classroom, hoping that no-one would come in and decide she was a complete nerd for being quite so early.
Having settled herself in her usual desk (or, anyway, the one she'd been using since her first English lesson when she'd hopefully dropped herself in next to Cara, as that arrangement seemed to be working out quite well) she kept quiet as the English teacher began to write great reams of instructions - or so it seemed, anyway - on the board, half-way through deciding that she needed to copy all of this down. Flipping her notebook to a new page, she carefully dated the top, then began to transcribe what was on the board in fittingly neat handwriting. Wondering precisely what 'Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs' was, she looked up as Cara entered the room, and smiled at her as she too sat down at her usual desk.
"Hi!" Jess greeted, brightly, taking a moment's break as she realised she'd put extra vowels into 'aesthetically', and nodding her head towards the board. "This looks... complicated." She really hated public speaking, as she got really nervous and tended to mess up so the fact that they were now working towards a presentation was, well, quite frankly terrifying.

Cara looked over as the girl who spoke to her, she returned Jessica's smile. "It's not too hard." She assured the younger girl softly. "Maslow's hierarchy of needs is just about psychology. It's nothing too big." She'd done a paper on the hierarchy for the course she had recently done, and wondered if she should drop this into a conversation with Mr Stone at some point. After all, she guessed that she needed to let the teachers know at some point that she had a BS (Bachelor of Science) in psychology. She shook her head and brought herself back to the topic at hand. "It's all about putting yourself in the shoes of a presidential candidate." She shrugged not sure of how to explain it. "I'm always happy to help if you need it."

Next to bounce in was Julian, the boy having dragged himself away from an early ride with May to get to his first class in time, amazingly having managed to be on time despite shopping for a shower and a bite to eat. Heh, he was clearly getting better at this whole 'time-management' business!
"Good morning!" He chirped to all and sundry as he entered. Nothing like a good ride early on to make him even more enthusiastic about, well, everything than usual. No-one could ever say that Julian went through life in a cloud of gloom, after all: quite the opposite. He seemed to go around permanently ensconced in a sun-beam which, though it could get irritating, could also be rather endearing. And he did know how to be serious just.... chose not to do so very often.
Plonking himself down at a desk, near the front but not too near Cara and Jess who seemed to be talking, already (he offered them both a bright grin) he tilted his head with interest as he read the board, mind immediately darting off onto what the core themes of his speech could be. And, oh, what should his visual aid, be - life drama? Maybe not. Maybe a Powerpoint was the way to go...
Noticing that the other two students present were copying down what was written on the board, Julian figured he should follow suit, and proceeded to drag his notebook and pens from his bag. After a few false starts - apparently half his pens had decided to unhelpfully stop working - he began to write, scribbling away in his small script, and using his usual utterly incomprehensible system of shortening words and turning words into symbols. It was what he always did when he was taking notes no-one else had to read, and had the added advantage that it meant no-one else could, in fact, read them, as well as speeding things up a lot. Assuming they were going to be learning about Maslow's Needs at some point, he starred it, planning to later also star the explanation of the phrase and, when finished, sat back in his chair, satisfied. So this was why people arrived in class early!
