Full Name: Julian Francis Sanders
Nick Names: Jules, most frequently, though he is usually called Julian.
Student or Staff: Student
Age: 13
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Male
Physical Description:
Hair: Light brown and wavy.
Eyes: Pale blue
Height: Approximately 1.6 metres
Weight: Approximately 48kg
Build: Gangly.
Blue-eyed, with wavy light brown hair, Julian has perfected the innocent look. Maybe it’s something in the way he tilts his head, or the way he positively skips along – but whatever the reason, he sometimes finds it hard to be taken seriously, as his appearance is an invitation for coddling.
Being thirteen (nearly fourteen, as he’s keen to remind people) he’s just entering the beginnings of his growth spurts, and as such has suddenly become rather uncoordinated. His legs feel too long, and his feet are never quite where he thinks they are. When he grows into himself, though, he should be a fairly decent height. He’s not particularly muscular - indeed, he is positively spindly - and looks like even if he does strengthen himself up, it will never actually show very much physically. It seems he’s doomed to forever look tall and skinny... Pale-skinned, Julian burns with distressing ease, and is forever wandering around looking lobster-like.
Personality: Julian is, well, rather like a puppy. Eternally enthusiastic about utterly anything, he’s the sort of person who’ll throw himself into something and only then remember to look where he’s landing (if he remembers at all, and doesn’t just spring again as soon as his feet touch the ground).
Coupled with his enthusiasm is an eternal optimism. Nothing is allowed to get him down – the glass is always half-full, the silver linings always outweigh the clouds, and the sun is always going to come out tomorrow. These two traits make him somewhat overwhelming, at times, the fact that he almost always seems to be happy puzzling people.
Hand in hand with this optimism is a certain naivety – being the baby of his family, Julian has always been sheltered from some of the harsher aspects of life, and learning about them will probably come as a rather distressing awakening at some point. He’ll always believe the absolute best of people, and is likely to accept whatever anyone tells him at utter face value – because of this he’ll be vulnerable to being manipulated, never having even contemplated the fact that someone might be that machiavellian.
He’ll try and make friends with absolutely anybody, bouncing up to people and engaging them in conversation on any topic he can think off. Highly gregarious, he really just likes being around people and talking, and can manage to be interested in almost anything that anyone tells him. He also hates to see people upset, and will do his best to lend a sympathetic ear if someone needs to talk, and is equally willing to clown around to joke someone out of their misery. He’s remarkably unaware, though, of when people don’t want him around, not dreaming of the fact that, sometimes, people might actually want to be by themselves. To that end, he bound all over people, and babble at them incessantly, even if they’re giving him the strongest ‘go away!’ messages that they possibly can, and will only realise that perhaps he’s not wanted when he gets yelled at.
He reacts strongly to being reprimanded or shouted at, and though he won’t quite burst into tears, he’ll completely wilt, and not say anything for a while. Usually after being scolded, he takes himself off somewhere private and berates himself. In fact, Julian berates himself rather a lot, as though he’s optimistic about outside influences and the future, he sets very high standards for himself, and mentally beats himself up if he doesn’t achieve them. Most of this is related to the fact that he is desperate to prove himself, desperate to show his family that he can be more than just the youngest member who always needs protecting.
Truthfully, Julian is rather a wimp, and will hardly ever stand up for something he believes in. He’ll feel incredibly bad about not protecting that cat from being stoned, but is unlikely to act on his impulse to stop it, not wanting to attract any trouble-causing attention. In fact, unless he can attract good attention, he’d prefer not to attract it at all, hating with a passion being embarrassed, or teased. When teased, he never knows how to react, and instead just blushes embarrassingly, and mumbles incoherently. Oddly, despite having so many older siblings, he never learnt how to be snarky – perhaps because his siblings were so much older than him that he never got the chance to practice..
Background:
Father: Timothy, a cook, currently running his own restaurant - 49. Pretty much the only member of the family that has treated Julian as someone older than an eight-year old.
Mother: Lilian, housewife - 50. Caring and warm, Lilian is the sort who utterly lavishes attention on her (many) children She has always been terribly overprotective of Julian.
Eldest brother: Anthony, photographer for National Geographic – 27. Though friendly to his youngest brother, the two have never really had a chance to get to know each other properly.
Eldest sister: Maria, a volcanologist – 26. The age difference between them has led to Maria feeling like an aunt, rather than a sister, but the two get on well.
Elder brother: Ryan, at university studying a postgraduate degree in engineering– 25. A rather forbidding figure, Julian has always been slightly afraid of this brother.
Elder brother: Stephan, at university studying Law – 22. He and Julian have always got on well, if a bit distantly, and Stephan was the one that Julian trailed around asking multitudes of irritating questions.
Elder sister: Theresa, at university studying Medicine – 20. Always felt rather dubiously towards Julian, given that he stole her position as baby of the family.
Aunt (mother’s side): Delilah, Delilah’s younger sister, married at twenty-one to Willian
Uncle (mother’s side): William, farmer, married into the family at twenty, only a few months after meeting Delilah.
The youngest son of a very large family, Julian has always suffered from being right at the bottom of the pecking order, and is so both rather sheltered, and desperate to prove that he can do something on his own, and be just as good – if not better – than all of his siblings. He’s been yearning for adventure and excitement ever since he was about six, and took up riding partially to be different from his family.
He began riding when he was eight, after the encouragement of a friend of his, learning to ride in the English style at a nearby riding school. Though he was very enthusiastic about the sport, his family never bought a horse, having neither the money nor the space to keep one. He kept up at the riding school, though, competing their horses when he could, and generally becoming quite good.
It was when he was twelve that, suddenly, his family’s fortunes began to look up, his father’s restaurant becoming very popular, and they discovered that they had rather more money than previously. This was the catalyst for Julian being sent off to boarding school – Blue Ridge, to be precise – as well as his current ambition to find himself a horse of his own.
Born and bred in New York city, Julian is quite the city boy, and moving to Blue Ridge, out in the country, is definitely rather a surprise for him. He’s probably going to love it, though, being the sort who adores any sort of adventure. Though he does want to prove himself to his family, he also does really adore them all, being close to his brothers and sisters and extended family, and will babble on about them all for hours, if asked.
Misc.: Though he does not own a horse, he has been riding for about five years. and is on the lookout for a nice all-rounder. Currently usually to be found riding the Academy horse Mayday Madness.
