Samantha sat on the fence, talking to her horse. She was supposed to be in Algebra 1. But she’d told the nurse she had a stomach ache, and had been given permission to go back to her dorm room to rest. After fixing up her bed to make it look like someone was asleep in there, Samantha had snuck out, her pockets bulging, and a baseball cap covering her face.
Lightning gave her a friendly shove, and Samantha smiled. “I’m sorry I’ve kind of been neglecting you boy. I’ve been so busy with homework and fitting in, I haven’t even had time to take you for a ride...” She trailed off, and fell into an unhappy silence. Lightning rested his head in her lap, and Samantha felt her heart melting.
A horse whinnied from one of the other fields. Lightning yanked up his head, and Samantha had to grab hold of the fence post to stop from falling off. The horse’s nostrils flared, and he pawed the ground. Then suddenly, Lightning kicked up his heels and thundered down the fence line. Samantha watched breathlessly. The horse seemed to eat up the ground with each stride, and she was amazed at how his whole body seemed to lengthen until he was stretched out like a greyhound. Lightning slammed on the brakes at the far end of the field. He tossed his head and pranced back, as if showing off.
Samantha felt a glow of pride, and she slid down off the fence. Lightning pricked his ears when she called his name and trotted over. The horse stood quietly while she patted him, turning his head to sniff her hair where it poked out from under her cap. Samantha wrapped her arms around his neck and hugged him. “I love you boy,” she whispered with a smile. “I just wish I could do well in school. It’s not like I don’t try. I just can’t seem to make things work in my head.”

* all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - James stepped from the broodmare into the fall air. It was humid, but not as much as it was in the summer. There was a breeze blowing, removing any traces of excess heat, but bringing with it the smells of autumn. Once a good way away from the barn, James pulled out a cigarette and lit it. He wasn't an excessive smoker, about one or two smokes a day was all that he allowed himself, and then only when he was alone, and far away from any barn.
Walking past the paddocks afterwards, James headed towards his own where Thorn was standing. The gelding had a keen sense of hearing, and heard his master before James had even seen the horse. By the time he had reached the paddock, Thorn was waiting by the gate. He nickered eagerly, and James gave him apple pieces that he had bought with. Foaming was a speciality of Thorn and none more so when he was eating a favourite treat.
Haltering him, James led the gelding from the paddock. He was going to have to change before he rode, as cargo pants and sneakers wasn't the best riding gear. While walking back he saw a gorgeous horse, flat out running. It was a beautiful sight to see. Thorn pranced next to him, also wanting to break loose and run. James held him in though, and seeing the owner walked up to her.
He was disconcerted though to see that she was a student. A student that was obviously bunking out of class. She was talking to herself, and James couldn't catch her words. Once he was close enough, he wondered what approach he should take. Strict or lenient? Excuse me, but may I ask why you aren't in class? he asked, his voice holding concern. Lightning tossed up his head and snorted loudly. Samantha pulled a face, grabbing her ponytail as she pushed him away with her free hand. “Gross!” she exclaimed with a laugh. The smile died on her lips, as she saw the man standing outside the field fence. Samantha froze, her heart in her throat as she swallowed hard, and tried to think of an excuse.
Samantha pretended to be busy tucking her jeans into her boots. “I was sick so the nurse said I could leave class early,” she lied. “But then I felt a bit better and I forgot that I had to go see Lightning since he had something in his shoe the other day.” She straightened up and smiled faintly at the man. Then she slowly crossed her fingers behind her back where he couldn't see them
She hated having to lie, but if she got a detention for skipping class, her dad would ground her until she was a hundred when he found out. Samantha sighed silently to herself. Whatever she did lately, she always seemed to be in trouble! She’d only skipped maths class because she didn’t do the homework that was due today. She’d gotten a big fat D minus on her last quiz, and Samantha knew if her grades didn’t improve, the school would have to tell her parents.

* all the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Thorn dropped his to graze along the fence rail, and James stuck his free hand into his pants pocket. The thing about wearing cargo shorts and a t-shirt was that his tattoos stood out quite visibly, but he didn't mind that much. He had been at the academy long enough so that people got used to him, and the only ones who still ogled him were the newer students.
James listened to the girl, and raised a skeptic eyebrow. The horse looked fine while galloping out like that. And it didn't occur to you to go back to class? he asked. James wasn't one to give out punishments, but bunking was a serious offence. Tell you what. I won't give you detention, but as punishment your're gonna have to do something. You see, I haven't gotten around filing and cleaning out my office. So this Saturday you and I will be doing that. I'm Mr.Cole by the way. Broodmare barn manager. For James that was a reasonable offer. Every student hated detention, and they would avoid it like the plague. Samantha scowled. "Who says I’m doing anything wrong?” she shot back. “I have a note from the nurse saying I could skip this period,” she said, pulling the rumpled piece of paper out of her back pocket. “I didn’t know that it was such a big deal that I missed a class I was excused from to see if my horse okay. It’s not like I’m out smoking in the girls’ bathroom or something.”
Samantha stared stubbornly at James. She crossed her arms, wishing she looked as determined as she felt. She didn't see any reason why she should be in trouble. Why couldn’t everyone just butt out and leave her alone? She was sick of being lectured by grown-ups who thought they could just tell her what to do like she was some stupid kid.
