Dear mum and dad,
Oh, I'm so very glad I'm here! I'm missing you, of course, but it's been wonderful here so far and I know it's only the end of my first week, but I really think things are going to work out. Blue Ridge is even more beautiful than it looked on their brochure and website, and the facilities (especially the horse ones, most importantly) are just as good as promised.
I've also met some really nice people (which I know you were worried about, mum, but there's no need to be, I'm doing fine) and I think I've made a really great friend already. Her name's Alyss, and she's had a really difficult life so far, so she doesn't talk, but she's really nice and sweet, and everyone's always said that I talk enough for six people, so that doesn't really matter at all.
Miss Carr - who's the overall barn/stable manager - has assigned me to ride Mayday Madness, this lovely bay mare (I've put a picture of her in so you can see). She's a bit stubborn, and you have to be very clear with what you want, but when she knows that you're in charge, she can really do it all! I've already jumped her, in one of Miss Carr's lessons, and she was really good. I also did a dressage trial, so that I can be put into the correct dressage class for my abilities, and I think that went pretty well, even if my plaits weren't very good - May's got a lot of mane! I'm still looking out for a horse, of course - there's auctions coming up in the town, soon, and Alyss recommended I take a look at those (she says she'll help me choosing a suitable horse) and the check you gave me to buy an animal is very safe, I promise.
Classes have been pretty good, so far. My teachers seem to be nice, and we're doing some quite interesting things: looking at the Crusades in history, and writing a report on an author from England in English. I'm looking at Bernard Cornwall - you know, the one who writes the Sharpe books - and am probably going to totally destroy any reputation I have by revealing an interest in historical fiction! Oh well.
Don't really have anything else to say, other than that everything's going really well and I do miss you all - it's weird having no family around. Anyway, I love you lots, and give my love to whichever of my siblings you talk to next!
From Julian.
This is May - isn't she beautiful?
