Okay, I live roughly ten minutes (driving time) from the nearest small town which consists of 500-700 people. A lot of my friends and relatives live close, and I know most neighbors.
Anyway, I am going down the main two-lane highway, and I pass a mini-van with their flashers on. Okay, small emergency. Then, I pass four sheriff cars, lights flashing. Soon, an EMS truck goes by, then finally, an ambulance. Nothing ever happens around here, especially big enough for all of those county vehicles.
I pull into the local dollar store (the main shopping place) and get the things I needed. I over heard a conversation between two people saying that a child had gotten run-over in the neighborhood of Lake Haven. That happens to be a few miles from my house, and it's also where my grandparents live. So, I get to my truck and phone them. They, had left their house not long ago, and passed by all of these vehicles.
Then, horror struck my mind. Could my grandparents have accidentally ran over a child and not Know???
I make the drive back down the highway, and exit on the country road that leads to my house, 4 miles down. I see the ambulance drive by, and an EMS truck, no lights on, no sirens. Kid must be okay after all. After another 2 miles, I see someone walking in the road. Nobody walks around here, it's too far from civilization. As I slow down, I notice it is a woman...pushing a stroller. Holy Hell!! Could her kid have gotten run over?! I quickly stopped and rolled down my window, and noticed a small girl sitting in the stroller. Okay, maybe she's just... lost, "Um, do you need a ride Ma'am?"
The woman looks at me, and starts to laugh shaking her head, "What is up with you country people? I'm just out for a walk. You're the 4th person to stop and ask me."
I started laughing, "Oh, well, enjoy your walk then."
"Thanks, my husband lives down here, but I came to visit from Virginia."
Anyway, after we talked I left. Her husband's parents do the plumbing work on my house it turns out. Anyway, I keep driving one mile from my house, when I see five sheriff cars blocking the road with their lights on. One of them moves out of the way and pulls off into the ditch with his window rolled down. I slow down, and roll down mine, "Um, I just live right down there," I pointed, "Can I go?"
By the grin on his face, he must have known I was confused, even a bit worried, "Of course!" he exclaimed, "Go through."
"Thanks," I smiled and waved. Then got home. CRAZY!
Haha, I bet that woman from Virginia is wondering what all goes on around here. But, on any other day, absolutely nothing.
